So I didn't have time to drive all the way to Mark Miller Subaru in Southtowne (my fav dealership) to pick up flywheel bolts. So I picked my kid up from SLC this afternoon and "risked" going to Nate Wade Subaru (the place that tried to sell me a wrecked Tribeca a few years back).

Low and behold..... the guy (and girls) there were totally super cool, totally helpful, and totally helped change my mind about that dealership. It was a nice surprise.

Nevertheless, picked up all 8 flywheel bolts, and "splurged" and picked up 5 of the 9 total pressure plate bolts (bought all they had). Total spent - $16. Seems worth it to me.... just for piece of mind.

They also were cool enough to look up and print out some directions, with required torque values (which I was looking for).... made for a nice trip.

Going this weekend to pick up a ball-joint separater, and a decent torquewrench (been looking for a reason to buy one anyway).

Anyway.... anything else you folks can think of I may need for this clutch install?? So far, I have:

New Stg 1 organic racing clutch kit (Clutch, pressure plate, bearings, alignment tool, etc.
Freshly resurfaced ACT streetlight flywheel (14.4 lbs)
All 8 brand new flywheel bolts
5 pressure plate bolts (hoping I can reuse at least 4)
    ball joint separator
    Torquewrench
    gear oil (AMSOIL severe gear)

So I went to the rallysportdirect meet, greet, and swap meet today.... figured it was something nice to do. I had to pick up my severe gear from the local amsoil rep anyway, who was going to be there, plus RSD supplies the correct redline for the rear diff.... might as well, right?

Found this fine jewel..... barely used Koyo aluminum 53mm racing radiator... for only $125. Sweet!!!

Check out the comparison to the stocker after I pulled it out of the car:

Got the fans and lines installed on the Koyo:

And....... back in the car. One small mod was need to convert it to the "old" style WRX is 1 radiator cap.... just had to cap off a line..... and she's good to go.

    Nice find!

The stock rad is a ticking time bomb anyway, as I'm sure you are aware.

Have you noticed yet how much hotter the top of your new radiator is when you put your hand on it to lean into the engine bay yet? Haha.

Stage 1 of the clutch is done. I still have the cries from a 4-year old birthday party ringing in my head, so I'm done for the night. Car is at least prepped for friends arriving tomorrow to help me out with this clutch job.

    WAY up on jackstands
    intercooler off
    rear diff drained + refilled
    A-brace removed
    tranny drained
    wheels off

    parts prepped:

    Sleeping for tonight.

And...... it's done What a PITA - LOL

Total.... about 5-6 hours of actual work. 3 more hours of beer drinking, chatting, and generally just being lazy

Overall..... VERY cool upgrade. New clutch is nice and grabby. Pedal requires quite a bit more pressure, but it's not unbearable. The lightweight flywheel is SWEET. Car spins up considerably quicker, I notice a DEFINITE improvement in acceleration.

    tranny comes out:

sitting in my front yard - LOL:

Definitely a few hot spots on the old flywheel:

the old clutch and pressure plate. The clutch wasnt "bad"... it was over 50% worn though. Considering I track it regularly, have 56k miles, and over 100hp more than stock for about 4 years..... I'd say the clutch was in GREAT shape..... glad I swapped it out though.

    New and old clutch disk:

Check out the difference between the stock flywheel and the ACT streetlight. WOW... no wonder it spins up quicker:

And...... new flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, bearings, and bolts..... all in and torqued..... ready for the tranny to go back on:

It was a long day... and I'm tired. An awesome thanks to Bones (Brett), Ryanveld (Ryan), and Ironhydroxide (Rusty) from slcsubaru.com. I couldn't have done it without their help.

The exedy clutch did you get the stage one HD or just the stage one clutch?

My 07 wrx ate third gear in april, so i said the hell with it, and dropped 3750 shipped for an 04 sti tranmission full swap minus the hubs and brakes and the shift knob and boot everything else was perfect.

I brought the exedy hd clutch and a braided clutch line from fastwrx dear god what a difference,

I see your going to do a 20g turbo, when your ready for the six speed swap, im going to save you 1200 bucks on this tip,
Go on nasioc and talk to subby dave, he has a couple extra kits to make hybrid rear axles
it uses a custom cv race inner joint, so you can make one off custom axles that are a r-160 out cup and wrx axle shaft and an 05+ sti inner r-180 cup so you can use an r-180 rear end.
driveshaft shop wants 1200 bucket for these axles and there made the same way as if you use subby daves kit to make your own
price for his kit $175 bucks

I have to ask you did you upgrade your injectors at all? if so which ones did you get? i want to do an up pipe on my 07 wrx but i dont want to max the stock injectors out and lose mpg because i need to go bigger on the injectors
i live my life a 1/4 mile at a time

I bought the Exedy stg 1 racing clutch. I like it... not too thrilled about the chatter from the lightweight flywheel.... but that is just the price you pay I suppose. I love the increase in acceleration.

20g..... gonna have to wait. I've been having severe headaches since last October.... and I just found out that I have bulging disks in my neck. It's not the "fault" of the car... but those coilovers make it worse... especially after the 20 hour drive to St. Louis I just did....

So... next up is actually a suspension "downgrade" to some tokico D-specs, and decent springs (haven't decided which ones yet). I hate to say it, but its actually a medical condition that is prompting me to get rid of them.

I love the way the car handles... but it is a daily driver... and I can't have a car that literally beats the **** out of me. Maybe if I were still 25 I'd be ok.... at 35 though, I still want a really good performance suspension.... but those damn JDM coilovers are just too much.

Injectors.... no.... mine are still stock. I plan on going with a set of 750cc injectors when I do finally get to buy the 20g. You can use the stockers on an 18G or a VF39, and they are pretty close to being maxxed out... but not to a dangerous point, unless you get tuned that way. The Cobb OTS maps are very conservative.

    Highway? at 80mph highway... I get 22.9.

How bad is the chatter? I've contemplated going lightweight flywheel, but I've never actually had the opportunity to hear it in person....

And which 20g are you considering?
