The SVX isn't "fast" per say at all. It's a 3.3L H-6, rated at 230 hp, but it's heavier than a WRX, and geared EXTREMELY high. I think the top end on an SVX is electronically limited at 150-something, but otherwise it's capable of almost 180mph.
But the 0-60 times aren't that impressive.
Highway gas mileage IS impressive. (27-30 hwy)
Cars were extraordinarily expensive (especially for a Subaru).... the SVX was over $10,000 more than anything Subaru had ever sold at the time.... so they didn't sell well. The one I'm buying sold for over $34,000 in 1994. The SVX was Subaru's first attempt at entering the luxury car market. I read somewhere that once everything was measured out, Subaru actually LOST $3000 on every SVX sold.
Only 14,XXX total were imported to the US over the entire 5-year span (1992-1997) they were made, that is why you never see them.
Tranny problems galore... which actually wasn't a tranny problem, it was a cooling/fluid defect that people didn't address or take care of.... so they blew a LOT of trannys. It had to do with a poorly designed screen in the factory tranny fluid cooler return line.... it got clogged, tranny overheated.... and boom. Once the cooling problem was addressed (like an aftermarket filter/cooler), the trannies are practically indestructible.
The brakes weren't big enough for such a heavy car either... neither were the wheel bearings... so the rotors and wheel bearings were also notorious for going bad. High quality rotors and being careful not to over-torque the lugnuts solves these problems.
The good thing, is that the engine internals were almost entirely forged (crank, rods, pistons, etc), so the engines were highly OVER-built, and it's quite common to see SVXs with well over 300K miles, still going strong (assuming the tranny works-LOL)
All of the common problems have been addressed/fixed/and upgraded to ensure they don't happen on the one I'm buying
As far as the "holy grail" of Subarus is concerned..... if I had to pick only one..... from any year.... and country..... it would be the 2004-2005 JDM Forester STI![]()
