I called Subaru this morning and they quoted me about $1430.00 for the parts and labor (including flywheel) for a new clutch. F*** that. I'm thinking about buying the parts and having a mechanic thats a friend of the family do the work, because I still don't feel comfortable doing it myself with a sloped driveway and limited tools. I was looking at either ACT, Exedy, or XTD. Has anyone had experience with these brands? Some other brands I saw on Ebay for cheaper include EZ Racing, F1, and Boss clutches.

    Thanks
You should price out a OEM brand new clutch. It's not like your power is too much for it. It's just that yours was old and warn.

Oh and I would go see a certified tech, preferably one that knows subies to check out your car and diagnose it before you order clutch parts in case we are all wrong.

Stick with the OEM clutch and flywheel - your gearbox will thank you. The price quoted by the Subaru dealer is their normal price and includes a new flywheel (which I would recommend). You may find an independent shop to do it a bit cheaper, but make sure they know what they are doing. I've had one done at thee dealer and I've done one with a friend. The money is almost worth it to have the dealer do it!!

Def data-log. Sorry more people arent on right now to help.
I finally downloaded the ecuExplorer software and did some datalogging. I thought their would be something called boost pressure, but no, so I am assuming that manifold relative pressure(MRP) is the the boost. (someone please correct me if I am wrong). Going through the city, I managed WOT in 3rd gear and MRP/boost peaked around 13.8. I then took it to the highway and got WOT in 4th and 5th gear and it peaked at around 15.7 psi... later with the pedal floored doing about 100 mph it peaked at 15.961 psi. So it appears that I have no bad boost spike. So, as many of you have mentioned, its probably my clutch slipping, not boost spike. I will probably take it to Subaru in for a final decision.

Here are some other #'s from my datalogging. I don't know what they mean but maybe they are entertaining to some of you:

Manifold Absolute Pressure - peaked 30.616 psi
    Mass air Flow - peaked 156.28 g/s (minimum-1.73, idle - 4.75ish g/s)
    Ignition timing - minimum = -10, idle = 12-13, max = 43
Primary Wastegate Duty Cycle = max 97.65 %

Thanks, I called a different dealership in Tampa, and they quoted me about $200 less for the new clutch, flywheel, and labor, so maybe a couple more calls and I'll do it.

I think I have a better way to describe my clutch/boost spike dilemna. Its that feeling like you step on the gas in an automatic on the freeway and the rpms's jump up, then it shifts and they go back down. I have checked out my boost gauge/AP handheld, and datalogging and still have seen no signs of boost spike so it has to be my clutch. Thanks for everyone's help.

I haven't tried it on the highway yet, but I just picked up a bone stock 02 wrx wagon and notice quite a bit of chatter, to the point when the car doesn't go sometimes b/c the chatter is so bad. I don't want to have to spend another $1100 when I JUST bought the car... If it is infact the clutch, why would I only want the stock oem one? I plan on doing the stage 2 mods down the line.

i'm wonering if i am having a simlar problem, my car does this, but it IS during shifting. i have a helix catless TBE, and even if i fully let off the gas between shifts it still goes vroom, up about an extra 500-1000 rpm. but more-so when i am driving hard. but its been doing it ever since i've had the car, for about 2 months. or is this normal.

my boost also gets up to where it normally does, but then it will bounce down a few psi and back up. hopefully it will stop when i get an AP, and not cause any damage in the mean time.

sorry to piggy-back your thread btw

Mine does this too when I shift and driving spirited. The rpm's go way up. All people have told me is that it's the way I shift. Even if I'm all the way off the gas before I clutch it still does it. Makes no sense to me at all. Mine's an 02 with 72k miles, stock everything, original clutch.

I am pretty sure its normal. I have an '02 with 80K+ on it and it has always done it occasionally. I am pretty sure your clutch isn't slipping if this is the only symptom.

yeah i didnt really think it was the clutch slipping, but i just thought i'd ask. maybe it is just the way i shift.

no cel or fuel cut. this is a link to the log. thanks https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0p...it?usp=sharing
