I know it's been covered some time before, but a nice little reminder for those that haven't seen it- clean your MAF sensor- it's easy and cheap

The MAF is simply unplugged and then two phillips head screws (use a rather fine phillip head so you don't round the screws) and it's it out.

I use CRC MAF cleaner- $5 a can and specifically made to clean MAF's

Before and after pics of the MAF- first one it's black and kind of sooty looking, the second you can see the wires cleaned and the almost amber color of the "bulb". Simply give it several sprays from several different angles- let it dry good and put it back in.

This is a good time to throw a new filter in as well

I just did this using the CRC MAF cleaner. The wire with the bulb was a bit sooty on one side only. Gave it a few good squirts up inside where the wires are. I had about 15K miles using a K & N filter (I am back to the original paper).

Seemed like a good time to Cobb AP reset the ECU as well.

With sales tax the can was $9 even. Was I raped?

If you read their technical brief: http://www.crcindustries.com/files/M...0FINAL%202.pdf you'll get a little insight, but not much. Other products such as brake cleaners have more of a chance of damaging the easily damaged parts acc. to CRC. Piece of mind = worth getting "raped" for a couple bucks. Truth is, you are improving how the MAF sensor works by cleaning it. The CRC product won a Popular Mechanics award, which doesn't say it all, but it must be worth something. It may be best sham to hit MAF sensors yet, or it may be the saving grace easy clean maintennance item we've been looking for.

Have had some time to drive the WRX after the MAF cleaning / AP ECU reset. The idle seems to be noticeably smoother. I will see what the MPGs are on this tank as well.

I can't find this stuff either, and I really need it. I've been running a Green filter for a while and my car has 40k on it. I've never cleaned the MAF, it's probably filthy.

I've bought a Brake Cleaner which is a Certified one, and said in big letters "Non-Clorinated" or whatever that word is hehe.. and after spraying some into a baggy and dipping the MAF sensor in there, it was USELESS... so what i did was spray the brake cleaner onto a Q-tip and gently kept wiping it. Once the q-tip is dirty, just use another.
Works like a charm... I notice a little smoother ride and idle, but nothing outstanding since my MAF wasn't to dirty, but it sure is worth the few dollars.

I got to drive my car for a good amount of time last night. It def. feels much more responsive and smoother. I have been running a K&N for about 30K so my MAF was pretty dirty.

I went to Radio Shack to buy electronic component cleaner for $10. I wouldn't recommend using it as it took forever to dry out and some part of plastic turned slightly white.
