This summer I would like to get a TBE. Right now im just running the nameless axel back. I own a 2016 wrx and I was wondering if running a tbe would cause any harm to my engine with the added power. I know I need a pro tune which I plan on getting. Thanks in advance for any help.
You need to calibrate the ecu for all mods on the car. Without doing so, then you will damage your car. So long as the ecu is calibrated for any and all mods and supporting mods (For example let's talk about 3rd gen wrx using a catless exhaust rather than a high flow cat. Susceptible to boost spike and boost creep which cannot be tuned out. You would need to do an external wastegate setup in order to safely run catless) Not sure if the 15+ have the same issue, but just something to also know
If it's manual and the tune is good it shouldn't really be any less reliable than stock.. at least I wouldn't expect a catastrophic failure (unless it was going to happen anyways). If you have the CVT and drive it hard it will probably break.
Honestly, if you maintain it properly, check fluids etc, you're going to be fine. Subaru would also deny a claim on a completely tock car if the engine goes and they see you were hooning around in it prior to the event.
I believe the Subaru dealer in Milford, CT is pretty chill when it comes to mods. I swear I've seen some Perrin gear in their parts store.
I was working at Toyota just up the road from this dealer, hearing a story about one of the service advisors friends....bought a 2012 (only a year or to old at this point in time) bone stock, and denied his warranty claim after grinding his engine. Why? Because looking through his ECU they could see multiple redline hits, and some WOT all prior to blowing it
Lets be honest. No one really buys these cars without wanting to have some fun with them. Whether it's some track days, mods, or no mods plans but just a fun little weekend car, the warranty will only be honored if the failed part failed in the way it's designed to work....so any signs of abuse, stock or not by itself is grounds to deny your claim.
Now, that also isn't black and white either. It will always depend on the dealer because some are more willing than others.
I have another question... Do you think I'll need to upgrade my clutch along with my new tbe or will the OEM hold up and any are there any other necessary supporting mods? Thanks again guys.
Remember you got a 60k mile powertrain warranty on that tranny and it's guts. I'm protuned stage 2 with a catted jpipe and catback, the dealer wasn't too concerned when they replaced my clutch and throw out bearing but one of the techs pretty much said what nsibanez said, you don't buy these kinds of cars to granny around town all day. He said they scour the ecu looking for multiple resets and redline spikes.
