What's up everyone? So, I just went out and got myself a new 2016 Impreza! I figured I went the better route with getting that instead of the WRX or WRX STI and just put the turbo kit on myself (I'd love to get to know more about cars, and what a better way to do it!)
My biggest question is, is this even possible? I looked online, talked to shops, etc. and nobody has given me a straight answer. I want to get the lowest turbo kit installed first. I'm not trying to go from stock to the track, and I know there's risks with doing it as well.
From what I did see, I'd need to get a new exhaust, intercooler, turbo, oil lines, blow-off valve, and headers. I'd rather not blow up my car, so I figured come to the place where people know something. Any help would be appreciated, being a new member kinda makes me nervous haha. Thanks in advance!
If you have loads of money, no regard for reliability, and balls of steel then go for it! But in reality do not do this. Internals of the engine matter with turbos and it requires so much more than just the turbo and the hardware surrounding it. Enjoy the car and maintain it, it's a brand new impreza, not a old 240 project that needs boost. On that note, welcome to subaru!
P.S. If you want to learn more about cars, pick up a beater project for very cheap and work on something like that and hoon that thing vs a brand new car
Quite the opposite, if you wanted the turbo car, you should've gotten the turbo car.
This isn't a need for speed game, you can't go for the "lowest turbo kit first" and build your way up.
If you were going to turbo that car, you'd have to replace not only engine internals (Rods, pistons) fueling (injectors, pump), and tune the car (I'm not even sure they make an aftermarket tuning option for the impreza), but you'd also have to have much of the turbo kit custom fabricated, as well as replacing a large part of the drivetrain to handle the added horsepower.
There is a thread around here were someone turboed an older impreza. It can be done.
The N/A engine is not really designed for forced induction. The compression ratio, materials, and fueling are typically not up to the task. Then you have the problem of everything behind the engine. I don't know the power holding limits of the non turbo drive trains I would guess it would also be something to address.
I'm not going to say it can't be done, but it'll cost you twice as much as it would have to just buy the sti.
You also have to take into account that the guy that turbo'd the older one did tons of fabrication, didn't care if it blew up, and was a skilled mechanic.
I'm aware. I'm not saying this is in any way a good idea. But the question as to if it can be done is yes. The question as to should, pretty close to no. Unless the OP has money to burn and wants to be a guinea pig.
Thanks everyone! I'm going to go trade in for the WRX in the future. For now, I'm going to enjoy my drive! If people are saying it's a bad idea, I'll take that haha
Yeah.. it can be done, but to do it right it's going to cost a good deal more than if you were to just sell it and buy a WRX. Then, assuming you spent the cash and all the time required, it would still be a base model Impreza and the resale value would reflect that.. not to mention all the problems you would undoubtedly have with it, and good luck trying to get anything warrantied after you've changed everything around.
It would really just be a huge waste of money and time.
If you really want to learn about cars and work on them, keep your new Impreza as a daily driver, and pick up an older model WRX that is already out of the warranty period and needs a new engine or something. That way you're not ruining your brand new car, and you still have something to drive while you work on your project car.

I think you're under the impression that the WRX is the same as an Impreza but with a tubro charger.... There are vast differences in the cars from the steering rack, to the chassis, the transmissions, brakes, motor, and suspension. You can't just turn an Impreza into a WRX by slapping on a turbo charger.
