My Review: ETS Quiet Catback (With Resonator)

So, I purposely waited over a week after the install to write a review of this gorgeous exhaust system. New exhausts are, well, new, and I couldn't rate the tone of the exhaust until I got some mileage and burned the packing down a little so it could reach it's true sound. I researched endlessly for the next exhaust I was going to buy for my '15 STi. I bought it in May off the lot. Hated the way the SPT looked, and knew that day that I was going to be purchasing another exhaust. This review is the result of hours, possibly days, of searching for exhausts, contacting people to hear their exhausts in person, and finally deciding on this exhaust with these options... as I mentioned, my 2015 STi originally came with the SPT system, and while it gave a nice bit of "Subaru Rumble" and didn't drone much, it left a lot to be desired in terms of both looks and sound for me, not to mention it weighed a ton, and was only 2 and 3/8".

I ordered the exhaust from Import Image Racing, who gave me the best price, and then shortly after I contacted ETS just to make sure they'd received my order. They assured me they were currently building my exhaust to order, with polished tips, mufflers, and the optional midpipe resonator. Roughly a week later, this beauty showed up via UPS in a box that could've doubled as a coffin, and I'll let the weld porn do the talking.

I haven't been able to get any great pictures as it's been rainy and disgusting here, so the above will have to do for now, but aside from some adjusting of the tips, the fit on this thing was spot on. I didn't even have to use a stock downpipe adapter for it to fit. It bolted right up to the stocker with the donut gasket. I haven't had any time to make a video, so for those curious as to how this bad boy sounds, here's the video that convinced me to go with this model. Even if it's super ironic the guy can't even figure out how to start the car, haha.

The exhaust gives a wonderfully deep rumble, and is much louder outside the car than my SPT was, however inside the car, the drone is LESS in my opinion than that of the aftermarket SPT exhaust my car came equipped with. The exhaust has been everything I expected so far. Easy V-Band connections, great sound, and beautiful welds. Now I'm just hoping it holds up well to the harsh WV winters. If you're even mildly considering getting this exhaust, pull the trigger. I wish I would've sooner.

I also know that a lot of people are having a hard time with the "reasons" you'd purchase the "extreme" version, the "quiet" version, and whether or not to add the resonator. If you've read this far, you're probably highly considering this exhaust for your car, and I'll put it this way:

The extreme, on both the STI and WRX is LOUD... I mean.. insanely loud, as it's basically straight pipes with tips welded on. Yes you can hear the turbo through the pipes, and yes, it is going to wake up the neighbors. On a scale of 1-10 the extreme is an 11. On a WRX, it sounds very "tinny" in my opinion. On an STi... if it's that loud, it better be fast enough to back it up.

The "quiet" obviously adds the large 5" mufflers, and adds a very distinct and deep tone to the exhaust. It's louder than SPT, but definitely not too loud to be streetable, although the drone is a bit much, right on par with the Q300 on my '11 WRX... which was my most hated part of that system. Great sound, but forget having a conversation with anyone.

The resonator. Ahh.. the magic resonator.. that little 16" part that everyone seems to think is a waste of $100 when it comes to this system. Let me tell you, whether you have an STi or you're rolling around in your FA20, in my humbled opinion, the resonator turns this exhaust from just that, an exhaust, to a tonal piece of art. The drone is almost 100% eliminated.. the tone becomes several octaves deeper... and the exhaust sounds like, well, an exhaust, instead of a whistling, insistent, "I only care about my 1/4 mile time" wurr. I was especially happy to hear one of my friends FA20 WRX's with the "extreme" with a resonator, and I have to say, as far as those cars go, I've never heard a better mixture of loud and tame in my life. As I mentioned earlier, I've heard, and ridden along with the extreme..It's just as beautiful as the exhaust I bought, but it's a very harsh exhaust. The drone alone would nearly send you into the migraine zone.... but the resonator, in my opinion, no matter WHICH exhaust you get, or which car you put it on, makes or breaks everything.

Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed this, and I hope it gave you a little insight to this amazing exhaust that has little to no feedback on the internet.

Hi Chedelstein, welcome to CWRX. I never had a "stock" exhaust, but the Quiet version (with resonator, as i mentioned) definitely gives a good bump in sound over the SPT exhaust that my car came with.

Your car with the "Extreme" version with no resonator is going to be loud, raspy, and a bit harsh with lots of drone, but if that "raw" sort of sound is what you're going for, by all means, you'll be very happy. If you have time to change the order, and want a little less rasp and drone, I highly... HIGHLY recommend spending the extra $100 on the resonator.

Also, yes, the lack of info is one of the reasons I felt the need to publish this review Hope it helps someone.

Just wanted to bump this up. Have a little over 1,000 miles on the exhaust now and I'm still liking it just as much as the day I got it. It's gotten louder now that it's broken in, and I'm incredibly glad I didn't go with the "extreme" Can't believe how great this exhaust sounds on the EJ compared to so many others I've heard. Compared to this, my old Q300 didn't even sound nice.
