Hey I have a question about the 05 outback 2.5xt that my wife and I might be getting. I've heard some issues with there turbos so my question is. Is it gonna affect the car badly if I just take the turbo off?

It's not that kind of party.

The turbo is essential for engine function. It cannot be taken off at all, let alone "just."

For info on how to evaluate a used Impreza, see the sticky threads in the purchasing subforum. The Outback will not be different in essense.

Many people believe that internal combustion engines work by burning gasoline. In fact they mostly burn air (think of volume differences -- a glass of gasoline for a bathtub of air, or even more). A turbo is an air pump. The engine is managed with that availability of air in mind. It's not a removable part.

Come to think of it, I'm right (heh...): It's not an expendable part either. There is no service intervals for turbos. They are intended to last the life of the car. They're not like a clutch, or brake pads, or tyres. Although they bolt on, they are still considered an integral part of the engine. Besides, the Mitsubishi and IHI turbos that Subaru uses are generally reliable units (the Mitsus in particular are very solid in my experience).

How long does it take to change the head gasket with a well equipped garage?

There are two head gaskets. The left is slightly easier to access than the right. It's a full weekend job in theory. In practice it's longer, since one has to send the head off for surfacing or at least a check at a machine shop. If you're a private hobbyist working at home expect to be car-free for a week. It's quicker and easier if the motor is out of the car -- but then you have to put the motor back in the car. Pick your poison.

A shop could do it in several hours I suppose, say 5 (I'm guessing).

edit: You guys sniped me. Anyway, SD is the maintenance king. He's good.

    Simple answer, absolutely not.

Not trying to be demeaning, but if you wiki search turbo or turbosupercharger that should tell you everything you need to know. Because of the turbo, things like fueling, exhaust system, ECU mapping, etc etc. are all dependent on turbo selection and there are also several physical reasons why it can't be "just taken off."

Good luck with your car search. I have 280k on my stock tdo4.

Respectfully disagree: I'm useless. However I've gotten online help from this forum that was absolutely class, and it got my car back on the road. Several people answered detailed questions, offered advice, and generally bailed me out.

Another time, I did something very silly on my Honda, and an admin from this forum mailed me the part from across the country. Class.

    I'm in their debt.

Good luck with your car search. My turbo has 280k miles on it. That's the IHI tdo4.
MHI? You have the stock TDO4? It's a Mitsubishi turbo. I like it. Given a choice, I'd opt for the Mitsu TD05-14b as seen in the 1G 2L turbo DSM cars (the only part of the car that worked...). Just big enough in my view.

Octane booster is generally ineffective and turbo Subarus are mapped for premium fuel. So, neither is a decent option.
