2004 WRX with cbe uppipe intake and a tune is making a noise when the temps drop below 20 deg. It almost sounds like a building pressure for something. Goes away after 30sec-1min. Starts fine, fluids full.![]()

Sounds kinda like a building boost noise but at idle along with a slight grinding noise. I dont think its the turbo though just sounds kinda similar
Take a vid and post it.
There really is no way we can tell you what it is without actually hearing it.

Thinking it might be the cai sucking in air at high idle at cold start
The description could be a belt, tensioner, or roller; the latter two could be outside or inside the timing cover.

I think it may be the cai in taking air on high idle but i guess could be the air pump?
update: goes away if clutch is pressed in
Interesting. Might be the throw-out bearing... When it warms up the noise quits, could be?
You can't have everything - where would you put it?
Agreed throw out bearing. Not to worry until ambient temps go up, or if it does it all the time.

Both my new WRXs make a high whine sound when weather is really cold. (Below zero). The sound goes away after about 5-7 seconds. I think the turbos just hate cold weather...or North Dakota![]()

It could be the clutch pressure plate. I always thought the noise I had was a throw out bearing, then I replaced everything associated with the clutch and it made the same noise. Watched some Youtube videos, and turns out it was pressure plate/flwheel noise. While the noise is loudest with light weight flywheels, it is audible in stock form.
