Hey so I'm thinking about getting a Cobb intake and the air box with it. I was thinking of getting some of this reflective tape

I would just insulate the box and maybe the stock intake scoop that you use in this setup. Is this a good idea to keep intake temps down or just overkill?

It is a good idea. DEI makes good stuff, you should check them out. Gold tape would be even better as it will be more reflective.

That dei tape also looks pretty cool! Have you used it also why do you say gold is better? I thought silver had the lowest emissivity.

Hmm. I was under the impression that gold had the highest reflectivity (lowest emission) for IR.

Think about it this way, IR radiation is long wavelength. Gold is tinted towards the red spectrum, so I would think that gold would be more effective at returning IR radiation.

Gold is much better. There's a reason why ARFF uses gold coating on their face shields.

O I see I guess that makes sense thanks for the info. The gold would look cooler anyway!

So why isn't the rest of the suit gold?

Cost of aluminum vs gold.... as well as durability. The gold scratches off very easily, but the aluminum has to withstand you crawling on the ground, rubbing up against things while doing your rescue patterns or dragging out a patient. You also have to think about the amount of fire and heat resistant material's that are layered underneath the outer layer. There's the outer barrier, a liquid barrier, and then a thick heat resistant barrier.

For the face.... you have your polycarbonate SCBA mask, and then your face shield with the gold.

I can tell you that there is a marked difference between having a face shield with fresh gold, vs something that's been used and abused. There's also a huge difference between having your face shield up vs down.
