I recently passed Colorado emissions testing with no pre-turbo catalytic converter and stock turbo back. they did no visual inspection only a sniffer test and OBDII. I could have had 10 times the levels I had and still pass. you could probably still pass with only 1 of the factory cats in place. I have the resistor fix in place.
Good to know. Living in Vegas, I've never had someone do a visual inspection, but I also never had a modified car. I'm thinking I might just like to get an up-pipe with a bung for the sensor. I'm confused though, if you gut the cat converter and put the sensor back on, shouldn't it throw a CEL? Granted I'll be stoked if it doesn't, but it seems odd

The EGT sensor is only there to monitor the catalytic converter temp, it's not useful for EGT readings like when you install a gauge (which you typically tap in the exhaust manifold in the #4 runner. Since there is no cat, you don't leave the EGT sensor to possibly get sucked into the turbine. You want an uppipe without a bung, ideally, but if you get an uppipe with one, you plug it with a bolt and toss the EGT sensor in the trash, and plug the connection with a resistor.

Makes sense, thanks. Now I'm debating between a solid pipe, or the flex pipe. I can't help but the think the flex is a bad idea

A good uppipe with a flex section is ideal, IMO. TurboXS and Grimmspeed both make good ones.

A really good UP doesn't need a flex if it fits perfectly.

I've had zero issues with my crucial for many years of use, and have never heard of any from any other user.

    YMMV.

Replacing the uppipe with one that has no cat...will that cause emission issues at inspection? If I have to replace my engine I'm gonna rip out the factory uppipe before i drop in my replacement for the sake of ease.... unless emisisons will arise

the resistor fix doesnt help with the fact that I wont get by emissions... which leads me to keeping the factory on, and i dont feel like dancing with the devil and sucking part of the cat into my turbo, so can i get around it?

How will the up pipe make you fail emissions? It's pre-turbo exhaust.

Thats what I thought, but a couple posts previous zax said it would cause emissions problems...

Only because it will throw a CEL. That is where the resistor fix comes in.

No CEL, no problem. Visual inspection will still see the cats in the stock DP. Zach just didn't exactly fully explain himself.
