OK, this is probably a very noob question, but before I get flamed, could someone answer this question ?

there is a small "device" that connects the manifold directly to the intake (post MAF), and I can't seem to determine its function. I know it's not the BPV and the only thing I can think is that it's related to the boost pressure gauge. Someone let me know!!

If this valve is functioning properly, would you throw a P0442?

Well the actual purge valve is the electronic solenoid bolted to the manifold right under that. It should be plumbed inline right before the one way valve.

Yes as there are a couple of other valves in the system. There are actually two solenoid controlled purge valves. One at the charcoal canister and one at the manifold.

If my limited knowledge of the EVAP control system is correct, shouldn't the valve be attached to a charcoal storage container ... but why does it run back into the intake?

Because the manifold vacuum is what is used to transfer the gasoline vapors from the gas tank to the combustion chamber. This method has only been used since the 1970's...... Not to mention I provided everyone with a link the factory manual diagrams. Maybe take a look at those first.
