Well, I FINALLY got some work done.... I've really been slacking on the Brat. Between college, work, kids, wife, and 2 weeks in Italy... I've barely touched it.

Plus.... that damn passenger side rocker panel was a royal PITA. Every time I'd sand it.... it would have grooves and I'd have to do a little bit more.... once again.... and again. I bet I have 10 attempts at trying to get that rocker straight.

But.... I got it.... the rockers were the worst part of the car..... both rockers had rust holes big enough to fit 4 fingers into.

So... now that those are done.... I don't have to risk getting primer and paint all over my new clean interior..... so I finally tore town the pile-o-parts..... and started prepping. Everything got thoroughly scrubbed with degreaser.... dried.... and all the brown parts.... got black.

While those were drying during the 3 coats that they got..... I started installing the new carpet. I'm not a professional..... and they don't make a molded carpet kit for a 78 brat..... so it was all about the scissors... spray adhesive....... Hold....... scissors..... spray adhesive..... hold......

Got the backpad all done and re-installed:

And the door panels....... The passenger side had LOTS of cracks... all of them were repaired with vinyl repair goop...... but the one on the upper-middle side of the door was REALLY ugly. Hence, the cool black/chrome subaru emblems..... looks a little awkward...... but better than a nasty repair.

The headliner... all the trim panels.. a-pillars..... everything is done.

The next step?? This f-ing dashboard. This thing is SO far beyond repair....... and it is IMPOSSIBLE to find a dashboard for this car..... so I'm going to try my hand at recovering it...... should be a daunting task.

Well, I hate to say it... but the plans have changed for the Brat. I admit, it was a bit of an impulse purchase..... but the "research" info available out there for this car just simply doesn't exist.

There is absolutely NOTHING available on the market, of any sort, of any kind of aftermarket support for this car.... none, nada. Literally EVERYTHING on this car has to be restored to original..... or custom fabricated from scratch. And the only original parts available are used or NOS. Subaru doesn't even support parts for this car.

I have searched, and searched, and searched. To the best of my knowledge, a DOHC Subaru motor has never been installed into a 1st generation Brat... ever. There have been a VERY select few that have shoehorned a SOHC motor into a gen 1... by cutting the framerails... but thgere simply isn't enough room between the framerails for a DOHC motor, unless I bought a gen 2 Brat... and even those would need to be cut. I'd literally have to REMOVE the framerails, and part of the interior fender to squeeze in a DOHC motor. Oh yea.... and then I'd have to custom fabricate a FRAME so the front end of the car didn't fall off.. not feasable.... and a SOHC motor isn't worth it...... because then I'd have to replace the entire drivetrain... from the engine down to the wheel bearings... which would cost me over $10,000, and several years of work..... maybe. Oh yea, don't forget about custom-fabbing the floorboards to fit the tranny..... oh yea..... custom fabbing engine and tranny mounts... CV axles.... just an absolute nightmare.

Then there's another issue.... I can't expect my wife to leave her $40,000 Tribeca sitting out in the winter..... and I'm not going to let the WRX suffer another winter either. This winter was HARD on the WRX sitting outside.... I'm not doing it again. It just doesn't make any sense to let my beautiful WRX sit outside, while this $1000 POS has the heated garage space.

The plan for the Brat has changed.... it has officially become more of a "resto-mod", rather than the fire-breathing monster it set out to be.

I'm going to use it as my daily-driver / commuter car. I need one anyway.... this is perfect. It's rare, it's cool, it'll get great mileage.

So...... the new plan is to continue with the rust-o-ration... and turn this thing into a budget-minded project. That was the original plan anyway - to keep my mind off trading in the WRX on a new STI.

Still going to go with the same scheme.... flat black with gloss black trim.... black steelie nascar style wheels (which will still require custom fabrication to the rotors).... I might still even go with a set of fender flares for a 240Z (I had to joina 240Z club, just to get measurements to see if they will fit).

Gonna go with a budget-minded paint job... gonna set the suspension where I want it.... and I'm going to find a new original engine (or rebuild this one)..... and I'm going to drive it.

Then.... I can afford to let the WRX see some down-time while I undergo numerous "big" projects that I can't affrd to do now because I need the car (brembo conversion, 6-speed conversion, 20G, rollcage, etc)

So..... the project continues... just in a different, more reasonable direction. And now..... there's a time frame: Next Winter...... by that time... I'll be driving this thing.

And who knows... maybe one day, I'll re-attack the whole monster motor/drivetrain project.... but for now.... I kinda actually want to DRIVE this cool little piece of Subaru history

More to follow..... new fender n the way..... I've already started exterior body work..... and the dashboard should be done in the next week or so

This sounds like a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

I still can't wait to see how it turns out

    ^^ Thanks!!

I've ignored her so much lately.... it's crazy. I did manage to get the dash torn apart, and sealed up all the cracks. I'm going to do my best to het it trimmed down and recovered before I'm off again to St. Louis here in just over a week.

Then, a couple weeks after that, I'm gone again, driving the SVX home on a 2000+ mile trip.

Looking for seats for the brat as we speak. Anyone??? Need something with an adjustable mount, because they don't make ANYTHING aftermarket for the brat... gotta use the factory seat rails.

My daughter is gone for the week..... I'm off of college for a month...... and we're not on some kind of a vacation.

I actually got some work done on the brat!!!

Got the "new" fender on..... no rust, but a few dings/little dents that had to be addressed. Got the ugly front bumper removed, the other front fender stripped and primed (few bits of surface rust)... and I got the nose stripped and primed.... got a rust hole I have to deal with, otherwise, not too bad. I also got the grill stripped down, primed, and actually painted!! I'll post pics of that later

Gonna do some more today.... but for now, I got all this done yesterday

Can't believe how much I got done over the 3-day weekend.

    Tore apart the nose
    replaced the RF fender
tore apart all the front trim
painted (gloss black) all the front trim
repaired 5 rust holes, and 4 dents, and 30-year old double sided trim tape and pinstriping.
Filled holes for factory side mirrors (new ones on order
    Filled holes for factory antenna
sanded, primed, resanded, painted both fenders, hood, nose, roof, and driver door
reinstalled grill, front trim, turn signals
    removed rear seats and headrests
    removed rear bed trim

    ............ I'm tired.

Gonna keep going after work this week, but it'll be in small sessions.
