    some ghetto, Wal-Mart special tachometer.

i got the seats, the carpet, the backpad, the interior rockers, the handbrake assembly cover, the steering wheel, and the seatbelts...... all out of the car tonight.

tomorrow is the dash, headliner, and the rest of the interior trim pieces..... thats when the ghetto tach will make it's way to the dumpster--LOL

Oh no..... it's going to be FAR from a sleeper.

It's going to be lowered about 4 inches..... and I've already picked out the wheels.... going with 17x9s.... I wanted to go with 10s, but they just arent going to fit..... I'll have to roll the fenders just to get the 9s under there.

    Oh yea..... and a FMIC.

Are you going to use the original Transmission?
It may be a bit of extra work, but a newer 5 or 6speed would likely hold up better. However you'd need a custom drive shaft to the back.

    Any plans for the brakes?

I'm thinking an 18G actually.... keep in mind, this car is front wheel drive (with the 4wD disengaged), so that frees up a lot of HP, and it also weighs over 400 lbs less than a WRX...... should make for a nice little road rocket
    Really? Not rear wheel drive?

    yup.... it's fwd.

The plan is to stick with the original drivetrain.... for now. honestly, subie trannies break because all that torque has to get released somewhere..... like gears.

in a fwd, or a rwd, that torque gets released via tire spin.... i think the original tranny might just be ok. we'll see. if not, there's always more parts available.

the brakes.... haven't really even thought about them yet..... i've only driven the car about 100 feet, so i have no idea how good they are..... i'll have to evaluate that when the time comes.

    lots of bodywork first...... lots

I just finally checked out your pics. From what I see there, its nothin a few small patch panels and a stud welder can't cure. I could fix that corner in no time, and that LF fender isn't even bad. Hell even the tailgate is easily fixed. The body work is not gonna be bad at all!

Oh and an Idea if you want to keep it FWD, maybe look to the subies brother....the Saabaru. IIRC they came with a 2.0T FWD which would be perfect!!

Well, I "just about" got through the entire teardown of the interior. Fell a bit behind with the dash..... took forever...... 30 year old wiring harnesses seem to magically bond to one another.

The headliner will not come out without destroying it..... thats the only piece that's going to have to stay in the car for dye.

all thats left are the door panels, and they are pretty easy..... i just ran out of time, and my back is killing me after getting that dash off. the dash, all the trim pieces, the backpad, seatbelts (entirely)... all gone.

disks on the front.... drums in the back.

WRX trannies arent bad..... and a driveshaft can easily be done. my concern is the location of the front shafts..... if they have to move forward or backward, the CV shafts won;t line up.... thats the main reason I'm sticking with the original gearbox...... for now.

Of course.... i have no idea if the motor mounts are going to line up correctly either.... i'll tackle that when i get there though.

Nope I was referring to the 9-3 Aero FWD, but according to wikipedia they use an ecotech. Which is odd because in the same time period the 9-3x was a subaru engine of similar displacement, the 9-2 aero was out and ecotech powered.

Motor mounts probably won't line up to anything, but hell build your own interface brackets and mount it where you want. Its not that hard, and you can align the shafts where they need to go then place everything else.

Actually, I've done quite a bit of reading, and it will bolt up, by slightly notching the crossmember about 8 mm..... doable.

However.... running into some issues with the tranny..... they make an adapter kit for ea to ej swaps, but the location of the starter might cause issues due to the year car it is.

We'll see.... I guess if a WRX motor is not possible, I'll have to research other options.

Swap in wrx motor, call advance adapters...they will build you an adapter for anything. Personally I'd buy that Richmond 5spd and convert it to RWD.
