    And......

I believe this is it folks.... or at least it's roadworthy now.... ready to be driven..... ready for the Peach Days show

I think I may need some new valve cover gaskets, maybe an oil pan gasket..... and little tweaks here and there.... but as far as the "rust-o-ration" is concerned.... I think this is it

This brush guard is "hopefully" going to serve as a front bumper. If not, I'll throw the original one on there for inspections.... but this is the way it's staying. I'm actually quite pleased

About 1 year and 9 months later:

    Thanks all....

So... I headed to Napa today to pick up some valve cover and oil pan gaskets.

Surprise surprise.... no one in town carries them.... special order only.

So.. they'll be here Thursday, and that should solve the oil leak problem. The leaks on the ground aren't as bad as they look... after all, that's 2 years of oil drips.... but I still want to get it all sealed up.

Also picked up some brake and clutch pedal pads today. Not "quite" the right fit (once again - surprise!)... but i used a bit of silicon and I think they'll stay put.

Still have to figure out what to do with the gad pedal though.

Believe it or not.... the car is still carrying the same tank of gas I bought it with 2 years ago - LOL Damn thing STILL starts right up... with no problems.... and idles like a purring kitten.

Subaru.... the car will rust and fall apart around you before the engine dies - LOL

I appreciate everyone's advice on USMB..... although admittedly, I didn't take it. There was no way I was going to pull the motor out of this car to change an oil pan gasket. Plus, I don't own a cherry picker... nor a vehicle big enough to get one to my house if I rented one.

I searched.... vigorously on a tutorial to remove an oil pan gasket from a 1st gen Brat..... nothing.... so here's "kinda" one.

The valve cover gaskets... piece of cake... got those done last night.. each side took maybe 20 minutes... including scraping off the old gasket... not really worth taking pictures of.

The oil pan.... not so easy.... but I did it.... and the motor barely came off the mounts.

So...... I disconnected the motor mounts.... and the driver side exhaust manifold (that was enough to do it).

Pulled as many bolts out of the pan that I could access.

padded the jack, and jacked up the motor about 1.5 inches by the oil pan.

removed the rest of the bolts using a 10mm socket and a couple of different universal joints depending on the application...... and then dropped the motoe back down.

    Pan came right off:

The oil pickup actually looked excellent... not clogged up or nasty at all.... neither was the pan for that matter.

Scraped off the pan, as well as the block, with a putty knife and a push razor, cleaned out the pan, cleaned the block, etc. Just a very light app of high temp rtv to hold the gasket in place during the re-install...

Had a bit of trouble getting the passenger side motor mount to go back in..... after numerous attmpts at "manhandling" the engine back in... I decided to use the BFH and pole technique...... low and behold.....popped right in.

And of course..... the tools required:

All in all.... not "too" bad of a job..... I'm sore though. Didn't have any oil... and it's too late now to do it anyway.... but I'll go ahead and fill it, change out the filter, and I might as well do the tranny and rear diff while I'm at it later this week.

    Registering her WEDNESDAY!!!!!! I'm excited.

So I thought I'd chime in and report all the drama for the past week or so...

This damn thing will NOT stop overheating.... no matter what I do. And, up until today, I had no heat in the car either.

Funny thing.... it ONLY does it on the highway at 65+ mph.... under that, it will run all day. I have done SO much to this damn thing.... and it still keeps overheating on the highway.

Flushed the system in 2 different directions, twice.

    New radiator cap

    New Thermostat

New dual-fan assembly with temp switch and sensor

    New water pump

    New coolant overflow tank

.... and today..... I managed to discover this nasty little b**tard.... the heater core valve. Thank God it wasn't the heater core itself, because after looking for several days, you cannot buy one to a pre-1980 brat..... at all.

    Coolant flush adapter

    radiator cap

    coolant overflow reservoir

    water pump

and the thermostat (which I've done twice to double check and make sure I didn't install it backwards

So..... even if i have to keep it under 50mph now..... at least I have heat for the winter. But in the meantime, I figure it the heater valve locked up.... then the radiator had to be pretty badly blocked as well.

    Next paycheck..... radiator.

Yep bet you anything its the radiator. One easy way to tell using a laser thermometer is to take the temps on both sides and compare.

You should drop in a nice aluminum unit and call it a day.

^^^ There's nothing left it could be BUT the radiator - LOL

    I've changed everything else.

That would be nice... but this has sorta become the "budget build"... so a nice OEM unit will work fine I think.

It's not a "severe" overheating problem... I'm driving this thing every day to work and it runs beautifully..... just when I hit about 60-65 mph.... the temp starts to slowly go up... and that means I have about 10 minutes to get to a place where I can slow down.

Once I slow down... the temp goes back down.

The radiator flows..... just not very well. Probably has something to do with 32 years of crap built up inside it - LOL

I put a radiator in it... I have pictures, just haven't posted them. My temp tags expired, so I haven't had the chance to take it out on the highway to truly "test" it yet.

All I need to do is go to the DMV and get another temp tag so I can get it inspected... but I don't expect any problems.

    "expect" anyhow.

Priorities have re-focused on the WRX because there is a huge track event at the end of October..... setting the suspension up to compete has kinda taken over... temporarily anyhow.

Plus, the wife blew the tranny in the SVX...... and we kinda had to make a decision on whether or not I want to put a tranny in it, or just sell it..... so it's on ebay now.

    Been busy - LOL

Saw that about the blown tranny...bummer to hear that!

Goodluck with track days coming though, that's gotta be a fun anticipation with a new suspension setup in the works!
