So what engines COULD fit into this thing? I just picked up a 79 and I'm wondering what my options are.

Hey man, just got an 81 today, and I'm going back to get and 86, to use as a parts car (Interior/ side mirrors etc.). Your doing great work. Can you direct me to the websites or information about engine space and whatnot pertaining to the 81's. I'm about to order the Haynes Manual for general info.
BTW, mine has the mounting frame and headrests but no jump seats

I have seen SOHC engines fit into one of these..... but you have to notch the framerails to fit the heads in. A DOHC motor will not fit unless it's a 2nd-gen Brat that has wider framerails (like the guy in Australia)

Late 90's sohc turbo legacy motor is your #1 option....... if you can find one with the ECU and harness

Otherwise.... just the 1.6 or 1.8 L motors that came in them stock.

Another issue with the 78-79 1st gen brats, is that if you notice, your starter is at the 12:00 position, whereas everything else Subaru made, the starter was at the 10:00 position.

That means you're looking at a drivetrain swap as well if you want to go with a newer motor.

    Sucks..... I know.

I'm going to use this thing as a driver.... thats about it though. In fact, 1st gen brats sell for GOOD money if they are clean and rust free. I might just sell it. Not sure yet.

I know you are trying to control $$$ but the best option for your dash is this:

look up Just Dashes dot com (I can't post links) they can do it & even customize it with gauge pods or other ideas (stereo pockets, storage etc)...

you rough in the shape, they final form it, use the proper materials for repairs & then vacuum cover it in the correct vinyl product.

Traditional upholstery vinyl is usually twice as thick as the original dash material. That is the problem. I have been doing custom car-audio & interior work for 20+ years... the vinyl yardage you find, even @ whole distributors is too thick to match those shapes.

nice project & great work... send them some pics (minus your cover-job attempt & ask for a quote.

Well, I bought a custom dash cover made of velour from a company I found online for $40.

    That should help at least.

Just bought it 2 days ago... hasn't even arrived yet.

One of these days maybe I'll get it professionally done. Chances are, it'll be arounf $400 though. Thats almost half of what I paid for the car - lol

Hey ninefourteener, I ran across this thread by chance and have read it completely. Looks like your doing a great job, cant wait to see it finished. I found an old brat for $800 2 years ago and bought it thinking of doing an engine swap also. After getting everything right mechanically and doing all the body work and getting it painted I decided just to drive it around like it is. Its a fun little truck and its amazing how many people haven't seen one before, even the girl working the parts counter at the local subaru dealer had never even heard of a brat! I still think I may try a swap in the future and since mine is a gen 2 it will be much easier than what you have in front of you. Good luck
    Greg.

    I towed her home Nov 17th, 2008.

December 18th, 2009........ 1 year, 1 month, and 1 day later...... The bodywork is officially....

    (drum roll)

    DONE!!!

Little bit of fine hand sanding.... and she's ready for paint.

Oh yea... and a THOROUGH washing to get over a year's worth of sanding dust of her...... but she's ready to go.

The tailgate has been a PITA for the past month. I swear someone took a baseball bat to it.... thats why I saved it for last. But... not too bad for shadetree body work job.

I've seen dents the size of my forearm

I've seem holes big enough to fit my fist through.

and I've replaced a fender and marker light that were completely smashed in

and I've (somehow) managed to repair both a rear quarter and tailgate that were crashed into as well.

And I managed to get the interior ready to go minus some seats and harnesses..... all that takes is $$$$.... no "work" required.

Also bought a custom dash cover for it. I never was really happy with my "attempt" at recovering the dash...... now the bad parts are hidden.

The right way? Not really.... but for a budget build.... acceptable.

Wheels.... tires.... seats... and harnesses..... coming whenever the cash comes in.

Congrats! Can't wait to see vids of it in action. I saw a nice Brat for sale at my mechanics place in town. It reminded me of this thread and made me want to buy it really badly.

Haven't posted an update in awhile.... been so busy lately.

So..... the bodywork is finished..... now it just looks like a "spraypainted" car.... but the important part is that the lines are straight, and there's no more dings, dents, and of course... RUST.

So.... I put it back together.... not my brand new NOS rear bumper installed, my new taillights (with no cracks).... put the front grill back on.... removed all the paper off the handles and windows..... and then went out and actually WASHED it...... and cleaned off 1.5 years of sanding dust and dirt.

For some reason..... none of my lights work.... at all. They did at one time.... so I must have missed hooking something up when I re-installed the dash. No big deal..... I'll figure it out.

But for the first time since I bought it 1.5 years ago.... I actually DROVE the car - LOL Only about a block up the road and back..... probably becaudse I don't have seats in it, and I was sitting on a milk crate

Yesterday, I went to the local auto body/paint supply store with a young friend from SLCSUBARU that is in school to learn auto body. He's done good work, I've seen it... and he's cheap.

We picked up 2 "Hot Rod Black" paint kits with the paint, thinner, hardener, et all i the kit, as well as a few other supplies he needs to do the whole car.

Car goes in for paint this Wednesday

So here it is now..... ready for another teardown prior to paint:

    She's all painted

Admittedly, I missed a couple spots in the bodywork.... so you can see a few things that didn't come out quite right. But with that said, I'm 100% happy with how it came out.

Hell, I'm FAR from a professional body work guy..... so how can I complain? Especially considering where I started with this thing.

I'm leaving on a 10-day trip to Japan Thursday morning, so I'll post more pics when I get back, after I'm able to put it back together.

Here's a few shots of the prep and painting process, taken by the guy that painted it for me...

The 18 YEAR OLD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT that painted it for me

The superb work of "eat_sleep_jdm" (Quin) on SLCSUBARU.com!!!

this was right after the first bake, so it still had some shine in it, it has been out in the sun for two days and its still getting a little bit flatter.

This was from 2 days later:
