loud but clear? i'm thinking a 12" JLw7 would satisfy your needs.

Try Rockford Fosgate subs... they have many models and very different prices... depending on what you need.

If your looking into the Alpine Type R's I have 2 12" ones that Im selling for a pretty reasonable price (way less than $400) already in a box so let me know if your interested.

Image Dynamics IDQ 12 would be a real nice addition to any vehicle, W7s are great but require at least 750 watts for a 12, need a giant box and are heavier then ****.
Eye am so re todd did.

Loud and clear...well i've heard a rf punch he2 in a rsx hatchback, and it is the opposite of clear. It is just loud.

If you have a sedan, then clarity will be pretty hard to get. I've got this program called WinISD (freeware) that will graph sub dBs when given certain powers, and other specifications. I'll post a link to it later...

anyways...I have an infinity kappa perfect 12d VQ, and it is the loudest of all the subs that i have compared (12w6v2 and lower, polk/momo mm12, rf he2, MB Quart rwe 304) It also has a very good phase regression curve (this is a good thing, meaning sound is more accurate), and has low response delay (another good thing).

This sub ran me 240 for the sub and box (ebay). I woudl reccomend making your own box if you know enough about woodworking to do it (WinISD will give the perfect dimensions for boxes).

the polk/momo sub was the clearest of all the subs that i compared, but it was not as loud as the others. I believe it was the third loudest (behind the MBQuart and Infinity). this sub will run you around 200-250 w/a sealed enclosure

JL Audio makes great stuff, my brother has dual 12w3v2s. JL is way overpriced though, and the infinity is louder and has better response and clarity. My brother has these in his 4runner, which is a SUV...so it woudl seem logical for them to be louder than my sub (in my wrx sedan). My sub, however, is louder in my car than his two subs in his 4runner. The clarity is about the same between the two. Keep in mind my sub is in a sedan, and his is in a SUV.

Infinity takes about 400 rms to power
i'd give more specs now, but i've gotta get to class.
PM me if you want more information (comparisons, specs, etc...)
