    Upgrading speakers in 06 TR

I must say as much as I love my new 06 wrx tr, I really would like to know what the regular edition sound system would have been like... haha. Good sound is very important to me, I cant just stand by and deal with these so-so front speakers for very long. Can anyone here give a testimony to what they upgraded to and if theyre happy with it? I always used to be a fan of pioneer head units, but whats an excellent brand of speakers to go with these days? I was thinkin pioneer also, or polk, or infinity... Also, even though the TR has no rear speakers, it at least looks like there is a place to put some in thank god. So, 6 1/2 in the front, 4 in the back-- whos already made some changes and is getting a full rich sound? Let me know!

I picked up a set of pioneers a few years ago in my 07tr.

I had rear 4" speakers in my tr... not sure why yours are missing/gone. ANYTHING is a step up from that garbage. If you can find a decent priced set of Memphis sound... do it...

Ah you are right, thanks for making me take a closer look-- I assumed when they said it had 4 speakers, they were talking about the two on the front doors, and the tweeters by the handle, and that the back grills had nothing behind them. I now see that the tweeters are empty and there are def 2 4 inchers in the back. Haha I swear Ive never heard any sound coming from the back until I just put my ear right up to it. Glad to hear someone else thinks the stock ones are garbage, I just read on another post that even someone with a 2010 said it is complete crap, so I guess theres no point in wondering what the standard editions premium sound set up would have sounded like, as Im sure it was also not that good. Plus the head unit seems easier to replace in the TR. Thanks again!

TR models don't haver tweeters, but they do have F+R door speakers.

You can fit a 6.5 and 5.5 speakers in them respectively with adapters.

Thanks! I realized I was way off right after I posted this thread... haha. I have since upgraded the head unit to a pioneer avh dvd series and it sounds great even with the stock speakers. Im sure Ill replace those too at some point, and now I def know which sizes to get... the only remaining question is brand... pioneer, polk, or infinity..

I've redone the whole system in my 06 TR.

Installation was a pain, but not horrible. None of the adapters that crutchfield sent me worked, and there was no bracket to mount the tweeter to so its not just a drop in replacement, at least not for those speakers. Thankfully I've got a friend at an audio shop that whipped something up for me quick and was able to get em in there for cheap.

Fronts: Infinity Reference 6020cs 6-1/2" component speaker system For 6-1/2" and 6-3/4" openings at Crutchfield.com

Rears: Infinity Kappa 52.9i 5-1/4" 2-way car speakers at Crutchfield Signature

I've got those amped off a pdx5 and it sounds pretty good. Not the highest end thing out there, but it is worlds better than the stock setup.

Looking for the following info for installing after market stereo:
    1. Where is best place for the amp?
    2. Where is best place for the sub?
    3. Are there any tutorials for pulling the head unit, etc.?
    THANK YOU! DA

You could have created a new thread instead of hijacking this one.

To answer your questions, amp can go either in the trunk, or under one of the seats. Either way is just as good. The best place for the sub depends on which type of sub you want. If you want anything high quality it will have to go in the trunk as there is no room to put it anywhere else. As far as pulling the HU, you don't need a tutorial. Just remove the facing on the console(pops right off). Then there are six screws holding the HU mounting bracket in, unscrew those and pull it out. As simple as that.

To the OP, which speakers you should get all depends on how much you're looking to spend. I bought a pair of Infinity Reference 6 1/2" coax for $40 to go in the front doors. I believe the model number was 6022i. You will need spacers to fit 6 1/2"s in. For $40 they're great speakers.

Once I get some extra money for an upgrade I'm going to replace them with a set of Hybrid Audio Technology Imagine series components. They sell for $200 and are arguably the best sub $500 speakers on the market right now.

    Thank you

Sorry for the 'hijack' - no excuse, but learning. Thank you for the help. Since this is a wagon, and there is no 'trunk', would like to put the sub somewhere out of the way. Any ideas?

If you really want something out of the way, and you're not looking for huge bass then you could go the route I did. I got a Boss Audio BASS600 from amazon.com for $100 shipped. It is self powered, and fits under either front seat. That's about as out of the way as you can get.

There's a review thread on nasioc.

I thought the TR has 6.5 inch speakers in the front and 4 inch in the rear...or do you mean you will need spacers for 6.5 inch speakers in the rear?
