Upgrade speakers

I was looking at buying the subaru subwoofer but then I thought about it and realized that it probably isn't that good so I was looking at a cheap, way less than $500, to improve the bass and just overall sound quality but the main part is the bass.

I would just upgrade to a component set, a set of tweeters, speakers for the front doors, and some cross overs...Ive been looking at the polk momo.

could I just get an aftermarket subwoofer and put it in my car - I don't have the factory sub.

would I need to do anything else
