you could get the pioneer 7' indash for that amount no steering wheel things but easy ipod interface and built in navi, and have money left over for all new speakers
I have an 07 so their were no steering wheel controls to worry about. I ended up putting an inexpensive alpine head unit in (car also came with factory subwoofer) and i would consider the results acceptable. I wouldn’t doubt if you looked around you could find some aftermarket head unit that can utilize the steering wheel controls, and they make a huge difference in sound quality.

No Subaru on the list.
IM not sure how the sub is wired, but i properly wired the new harness, and the factory sub was still functional
diddnt subaru just start offering the steering wheel controls, maybee thats an out of date list without consideration od 2008 models, good find though
I just completed the subaru OEM install and spent some time listening to different genres of music. Overall - I am pleased with the purchase. For $200, and a relatively painless install, my stereo is noticeably louder; though not much deeper at the high volumes. I was surprised at the small diameter of the sub when I opened it, but the sound seems inline with that size.
The gain knobs don't seem to do much, but I wish they had placed those controls on the back side so they were easier to play with.
For someone who wants to keep their system stock - but wants more volume and a little (very little) more bass, I would recommend this upgrade. Or - if you listen to music at relatively low volumes, the bass is greatly enhanced.

Anyone know what aftermarket headunit the ipod interface cable is compatible with? We have an '08 with oem stereo and the oem ipod interface cable. I wondered if that was pioneer compatable or sony or what?
