WRX vs. older M3

This wasn't much of a race really but I happened to be on a drive up the 5 freeway near Los Angeles when I saw an older ('97 or '98 body style) M3 driving obnoxiously.

Noticing in my mirror all the cut-off's he was doing, I saw him gradually come my way, ready to get around me. I was in 5th gear playing gas miser at around 70ish and heard his engine roar VUMMMMM at full throttle as he came to overtake me. I depressed the throttle 70% or so staying in said 5th gear and easily blocked him out and went ahead of him.

Too funny! I guess those older M3's are a washed up act these days?

IDK, Last week I had one that may have been slightly mod'd stay close to me and an s4 at highway speed (60-110ish). He did pretty well.

what are you mods? holding off and then passing an E36 M3 in 5th gear at 70% throttle means he was NOT even close to being at half throttle. The car traps like 3 or 4 mph higher than a stock wrx, and they give catless wrx's a run for their money at those speeds. I am not calling BS on your "kill" but in reality it was not a kill, but just him not really trying to pass you. For you to do what you did to an E36 that was actually trying you would have to be Stage4+ w/ a 2.5 motor or something.

OK, this is a question that originated in a different forum.

Someone asked about generating automatic responses to certain topics...IE, He/She was asking if it would be possible to have a software that automatically responds to certain topics and generating the post......this might be going on...

Obviously something is up, this "race" posted was not a real race. Honestly, I dont even thing you read the first post, let alone the rest of the thread.

Remember though--I said it was an older M3 from the late 90's. I've got a cat-free turbo, new spark plugs (did a lot), SAMCO intercooler hoses, and a short shifter (not that that did anything in this situation). Also we were not at super high speeds, this was just 75ish going on up to 95. And at that point, I'd successfully blocked him out.

I didn't have to drop the hammer on my car. If you guys say he was maybe half-throttle, why was the engine "VUMMM"ing?

I am not calling this a race. I just thought it was a funny occurence (underperformance) by an M3 wanting to show off/pick on another fairly fast car.

Either way, he was not giving it his all. The E36 M3 traps about 3-4mph higher than a stock wrx in MT form. Since you are catless you should be trapping around where he is, but for you to stay in 5th gear @ 70% throttle and still pull on him means that he was not giving it his all. Even if the M3 was automatic the outcome would not be like this.

Yeah, I can floor my car at 65mph while in 5th gear and it will take my car 10 seconds just to build up some steam to pass a Saturn. Unless I shift into 5th going 125mph, that gear is worthless.
Heck, even mashing the pedal at 65 in 4th gives me bery little acceleration until it builds up some mometum.

I don't know about that. The e36 m3 is not that fast. I think a cobb stage 2 WRX could take it.

I don't know about that. The e36 m3 is not that fast. I think a cobb stage 2 WRX could take it.

lol, you should read the thread more thoroughly

yes a cobb stageII could pull an E36 from a roll. I have beaten more than 1 with my turboback, uppipe, hoses, and pushing 16psi. BUT, you should also take into consideration that he said he beat the E36 M3 while in 5TH GEAR going only 70% THROTTLE!! that would require some serious ass power to do that to any car lol.. I stock civic at WOT could probably pass a wrx doing that.

IMO they really aren't very fast, I had one try to race me in Boulder and I thought it was a ford escort until it pulled he pulled up alongside my car again at the next light and i got a good look at it. I have to agree tho, you'd have to be going fairly fast in fifth to stick him.
