Sweet, thanks for the info Dave! I'll pass this onto my dad. Now, any idea if the manuals are about the same second/second and a half faster than the autos like our WRXs are?

    I agree Dave.

The S4 would be a better choice if he is looking for the most performance for the dollar$$
And the S4's six speed is very nice to drive.

But I say keep saving for an RS6 hehe

I saw BMW has the shifter that is an automatic but acts like a manual, but it is only in the top of line car they make for now. It has an H patern I think, as opposed to plus and minus kind of thing. Are they the ones with the padle shifter too?
Any thoughts on my question now?

Up until fairly recently Audi has always been somewhere between MB for Luxury and BMW for performance. Bearing that in mind, it's almost as if Audi was trying to attract buyers from both sides of that fence, hence Audi was always willing to push the Tiptronic on cars, to sell to MB/Lexus buyers, that I always felt would be better suited with a manual. There are however, only a few Audi models that you can't get a manual in.

Right now I think they are the A6 4.2, A8, S8, RS6. I'm sure I'm missing a one or two. I could never figure why you couldn't get a manual tranny on any car badged as "S". The reason that you don't see a manual RS6 is that Audi currently doesn't have a manual tranny in house that can handle the torque produced by the 4.2T....I think.

VAG has has gone public about making a concerted effort to have Audi compete in the sporty arena with BMW and to move Volkwagen upscale to compete with MB for luxury. I think you're going to see a resurgence of manual tranny's in the Audi line up.

If you look at the Audiworld.com forums you'll see that manuals are still very popular in the A4/S4 lineup and the TT is only offered in a manual. It's an option on some of the A6's. They're around, just mostly in the hands of enthusiasts.

The CVT is for the 3.0L FWD model only. In that case, 0-60 in 7.7 seconds, according to Car & Driver.

Hopefully I can provide a little insight. If your dad is looking to get something for under $50K, I'd say that the A6 2.7T is the way to go. It can be had in either the 6-speed or the Tip. The difference between the two is minimal.

A buddy of mine has a Tip S4 with the same GIAC chip that I have in my 6 speed. His 1/4 mile time is a 13.5 and mine is 13.3, so the difference is fairly minimal (either that or I just need to shift better!).

If he's looking for performance, I'd say go with the S4. Its lighter than its A6 cousin...and looks better IMHO. 2002 models are still available...in some places...but they are pretty rare.

Sweet, thanks I know my dad wants something bigger than an S4 so it sounds like the A6 2.7T is the way to go
