    WRX vs. Saab

This was pretty funny, actually. I was coming home from the mall last night around 7ish- it's about 25 miles away from the house. The road is one lane the whole way except for 4 major hills where there are passing lanes, each about a quarter mile long. I was approaching the last uphill section and was going around 65ish (55 zone) and was catching up with the car in front of me quickly. Turns out to be a new Saab, I think it was a 9-5 but I wasn't sure. Anyway, I noticed as I got closer he sped up to match my speed and when we hit the passing section he floored it. Already at 65 and in 4th gear, I floored my stock WRX and steadily walked him up the hill, passed him relatively easily, and pulled back in line in front of him. As I was passing him I looked over and we made eye contact briefly and I gave him a friendly wave, to which he responded with a one-finger salute. He also gave me the high beams for a few seconds when we got back in line. Guess he didn't like his precious Saab getting its doors blown off by a lowly Subaru. He pulled off on a side street a few miles down the road.

I like it though... Its got all the positives of the wrx but includes many things that are foreign to subaru. ie, refinement, luxury, comfort, style, etc...

Bah - if you want that in your WRX, buy a Legacy.

It must have been a LPT automatic. The 9-5 runs the 2.3 Turbo engine (and the v6 assymetrical Turbo, but we won't talk about that) which is available in three flavors..170hp 220hp and 250 hp...The 170 is 'peppy' but that's about it, it does push about 200ftlbs from real low, but it's basically dumbed down. The 220 can really move, though the auto vs stick will make a difference...the 250hp HOT Aero is very underated as these cars put 220+hp to the wheels and 250-260ftlbs, they will also 'overboost' for a few seconds.., though an STi can murder an Aero from a stop, the Aero will hold even on highway with an unmodded STi. The 2.3 can be modded in excess of 500hp, but most of those are in Sweden, and the it's the older 9000 2.3's that are infact easier to mod. I have witnessed a 97 9000 2.3T put 271whp/330tq down with a chip and DP (Swedish tuner personnally tuned the car prior to dyni)
