i'm very sure an STI can beat a 350z, my friend has an old 5.0 (o/r h-pipe, underdrivepullys, header, intake, shortshifter) and he beats 350z's like its his job, and i know an STI can beat his car. i think a lightly modded wrx vs stock 350z would be a good race.

In my experience, even if the Z hits the gas first from a roll, the initial surge from the STi will put it at least 2 lengths up pretty quickly. Above 80 or so, the Z will only be slowly walked, but it will get walked. They are gorgeous, but they aren't equal to an STi from a dig or roll, regardless of what the numbers say. Don't forget the torque, which is a factor even from a roll. The STi hits full torque at almost a grand lower than the Z. Not one to bench race, but here are some numbers:Originally Posted by fastwrx135

My point exactly! Stock for stock the Z isnt much... throw $2000 in mods at both cars and the Z is even farther behind... but throw enough money to twin turbo the Z and squeeze that 900hp out of it and where is the STi? Probably blown up or barely touching the 500whp point. Two different worlds when talking about mod potential... keep in mind the Z is the base for the new Skyline GTR... and I cant see Nissan disgracing the car by making it have any less potential.
BTW, the Skyline GTR is pretty tame in stock form as well... but we all know what it can do when fully unleashed...
Yes, that is me in my avatar! Kid's don't try this at home.

Did I mention he supposedly spent over $100,000 for this outcome...?![]()

Yeah, a TT kit on a 350Z does not automatically give you 900whp.Most are pushing 450-480whp and that is probably nearing the limit of the engine without changing a few things.
Honestly, I don't see the point in turbocharging a Z. I would rather spend the extra cash for a Z06 and modify it. You get a 12 sec car stock, can be a 10-11 sec daily driven car, and has the goods to kick ass around a track too. If you want to just drag, why not go the Cobra or GTO route.
The Z is great for what it is (I almost bought one a few years ago) but it isn't the best platform for building a drag car. Then again, there are much better platforms than the STi for drag racing too.![]()

Yeah...I was going to mention that anyway, so good thing you did. If I remember correctly, just to get mid 400 HP numbers out of a Z takes about 15K. Other than for those that have blown a block or 2, or maybe ESX, I can't think of anyone that has that kind of cash into an STi yet. I do know that we can get that much out for way less than 15K...probably closer to 7K (if you also want reliability). What would be tempting is to pick up a Z in a few years when the dip around 10-15K and then slap a twin T system on it. By then it should be at a more reasonable cost. Of course, who knows where the development of the STi will be then too.Originally Posted by SOUTHPAW

To the person posting acceleration numbers for the Z and Sti....KUDOS! People forget that when talking about racing from a roll / dig. Hp and Trq are not the only things that go into acceleration and speed, also a large factor gear box ratios. A more useful figure would be initial acceleration times for a certain gear vs initial speed. I have beaten 6 Z's with not a loss yet, not to say it won't happen. Each time it has never been hard, yes I might be a better driver but the wins have been easy. I have a chart showing what the Sti vs M3 Roll on gear vs speed / time equates to.>

What year M3 or did you mean to say Z on this? If its a newer M3 I'd be shocked to see the sti putting that much of a gap on it. Can you clarify?Originally Posted by V8killer2pt5
