Thumbs down Had to put the smack down on a Lightning...

I don't like futzing around with my old domain, but I had to. Today @ 11:30 on I-10 w-bound (from Katy) Guy with spikey yellow hair is driving a Silver 2001 or 02 Lightning like ass. I have never seen this guy in our owner's group so he must have either got it lately or was a rogue. Anyway, he was whipping in and out of traffic, which is very slow around the Bty 8. crossover. He caused a low-speed fender-bump between 2 cars (cut into a lane in a narrow gap, caused lead car to brake quickly, trailing car hit the other car @ <5mph) I was a bit indignant toward the prick because he was dodgy around me but he was crusing for a brusing.

I got on it a little bit, and followed him past the bottleneck where the traffic was turning off and thinning out.

    1. Lightning Lesson 1. When a Lightning has been hot-dogging it around in the heat, heavy stop-start traffic, it gets VERY heat soaked. The supercharged engine HATES heat, and even the liquid intercooler gets a bit tepid. The transmission will get overheated and you will get a 4 cyl cut-out until the transmission cools.

He stepped on it but was not being rewarded with the typical rocket thrust. I got behind him fairly quickly. However -

    2. Lightning Lesson 2. Lightnings handle VERY well for a 4800 lb. truck. So well in fact that they can be very competive in an Auto-X race in stock trim. Lightnings can change lanes very quickly and hold a line in the sweepers as well as any M3 or M5.

He started to get away again but the traffic was very prohibitive. I was able to stay behind him, cut for cut, jerk for jerk. We had a wreck in front of us but there was a hole to the right and left. I went right and he went left, and both of us had to stop for a few seconds, and once we were waived through, got on it.

    3. Lightning lesson 3. Lightnings have assloads of torque. Tons, 450 ft/lbs stock. However, if the driver decides to dispatch this all at once, the rear set will spin like crazy. Not to mention the Lightning's ECU is programmed to DUMP BOOST in 2nd gear if it detects this sillyness. Apparently the driver didn't know this and looked angry at his lack of launch, because now I was alongside, and toying with the beast. He wouldn't even look at me, no matter how much I yelled into his open window. We rolled through an left enbankment, and once we got straight at about 65 MPH, it was wide open in front of us, when he put his foot down and kicked down from 4th to 3rd...

    4. Lighting Lession 4. Lightning shift points (stock) are at 35, 65 and 110. Chipped you can gain some additional RPM but it will be around those. 60-65MPH is a very WEAK area for a Lightning to accelerate from on a kickdown, it is even better to slow down to 55 and get the top part of 2nd to build up monentum.
My WRX owned him all over the place, I was gaining on him all the way up. Lightnings are speed restricted up to 143 MPH, and even though they are bricks with parachutes they will do every bit of that and then some, stock.

I let the poor fool go. I hate giving out the secrets, but these powerfull giants have an Achilles' heel.

There is a guy with a Lightning at our track that I been racing for months. When he was stock he ran high 8s- low 9s in the 1/8mile. When my WRX had Turboxs stage 2 setup, I would beat him every time. Then he got a superchager pully(to increase boost 13 - 14 psi ), chip, exhaust, intake, 4:10 gears, drag radails. After all those mods we were running dead even in the 1/8 mile . We both were running in the mid 8s on average. Then I got my Stage 4 setup. I easily beat him with this setup. I ran 8.1Xs - 8.2Xs on average in the 1/8 mile to his 8.40s- 8.60s. Then he show up at the track with a 100-150shot of NOS. Yikes. He now runs very low 8s in the 1/8 mile. We are again neck and neck with him running a little faster than me on average. (but what do you expect a Lightning with all those mods +150shot)

They can be made fast but it takes a lot of serious HP to get those big trucks moving. He has spent several thousands of dollars in mods + a big shot of NOS to run with my Stage 4 WRX.

I've also spent a few thousand on mods but NO NOS - yet.
I still think I can take him without it. Race gas and a little extra boost + ice down intercooler just might do it.

Haha, your 1/8th mile trap speed is only a few mph less than my 1/4 trap (best of 90.0 for me, elevation kills NA).

1/8 mile isn't for me. Too short.
