smoked a 97-98 dsm gst convertible

It was simple. I see these head lights pull fast from behind and next to me at a stoplight. The zone was 35mph, my wife and kid are in the car, and we have a trunk full of baby stuff ie strollers, bags etc. So the light turns green and I slowly let out the clutch. I hear him reving harder so I slip the clutch some more and let him have it. We are even until the boost kicks in at 4k. I hear his turobo screaming louder than mine a nd for an instant I wonder if he's sooped. He wasn't because after first gear I'm looking at his headlights. I cahnge gears and easily take his lane. I back off at 40mph(that's all it took) and he quickly tails me. So I guess he was really running other wise i couldn't tell.
We make the right turn and he runs the red light pealing out and boosting past me as I turn into a drug store parking lot.
Are GST's really this slow? I mean I had alot of extra wieght in my car and I killed him.
Before I get any hate mail please realize that I 1. didn't break the speed limit by more than 5 mph, and that I 2. needed the right lane to make the next turn. 3. I didn't even need more than 6k rpm to do any of this because the wrx is one heck of a torquey car.
    DONT HATE!!!!!
    CONGRATULATE

He has decent power and FWD, so that can be tricky for 1st at the very least.

Thanks Plat finally a real man who knows reality, and can read too.
You know how it is. It always sounds worst than it is. Especially if you a dork. If you are a good driver you know what taking it too far is.
