    maybe its just an X tacked on for no reason, because it sounds cool and it flows.

    x could mean anything, maybe it was meant to be ambiguous.

    because the WRX is such a multi purpose car (racing, rallying, everyday, family), the may X stand for everything you can put in there

    From what I remember, they wanted to call it WRC but they would have had to pay a royalty to the World Rally Championship. It wouldn't surprise me if the "X" didn't stand for anything.

    The X in WRX stands for cross - World Rally Experimental? - Would a marketing team seriously let a name like that out on the market?
    It would make you think your car was going to explode.

    WRX, like BMX, AutoX, MotoX
