    Turbo GS300 Encounter

A friend of mine finally got his GS300 back since he dropped it off to go FI. They still need to tune his map but we did a few runs on the hwy from 60-90mph. There is a HUGE turbo lag, I'd pull 2 +\- car lengths before he'd start to stay even. Thus our last run I waited till he started to pull on me before I went WOT and we basically satyed next to each other the whole time. I'm sure once he gets the map tunned it'll have more whp ... I'm guessing 300whp since his car is easily 500+ lbs more than mine. The Stage 2 for the GS300 is supposed to give him 350whp but obviously it's after the 1-2 sec delay. I'm sure it's a fast car once the turbo spools but in races where the time is <5 sec it really doesn't matter.
I had a good time and it's fun to see everyone have fun. I'm glad I have a "faster" spooling turbo as I'd have a cow if I had to wait 2+ sec since I'm a 0-60 kind of guy.

Nice kill. Sounds like he should have a nice set-up once he's it's tuned a bit. Your's sounds nice too. How do you like the Tanabe exhaust? I'm looking for something that will make people think, "damn that car sounds pissed off, what the hell do you have under there".

I agree he definitely has a good start, I just wonder how he can get rid of his turbo lag. I think even once tuned to push 350whp+\-, he'll still had lag but just more power when the turbo spools. I'm running a Stage 2.5 tuned w/ a WB O2 sensor to 11.1 originally but now it's probably 10.8:1. None tunned, I was making 218whp & 200ft/lbs ... now I can feel it pull faster from 5-7K rpm but I haven't been to a dyno since. I'm thinking 225whp+\-. I'm done w/ my mods as I have other priorities in life.
The Tanabe sound mean but "LOUD" ... once it breaks in its even louder. It "always" turns head because people try to find out where the noise is coming from but not thinking of a red car w/ a roof rack. Someone from Hifi Buys once say "Damn, your car sounds like it's going to eat someone." I think it's fun to have but is very loud and droaning when just cruising. It's all you in your decision.

Nice. Did your friend get the turbo work done in Atlanta? I think there are a couple of turbo IS300's here as well.

My Stealth won't be racing this year (needs clutch) but I'll be running my Grand Marquis (9.9 @ 73 in the 1/8th) for the fun of it.

The Tanabe SRM is easily good for 1/4-1/2 mile away warnings. People usually can hear me coming.

I know EXACTLY what you mean. My friend opened the door and left it open since he heard me coming from a block away.

Now I got prodrive..... (Darn po-pos..)

What year is your friend's GS300? Is it the older one? I remember a while back seeing an older GS300 turbo and thought how bad-ass that thing was. They are big and heavy cars though but I think those cars are more about pimpin than racing. But to have a fast GS300 would be to have the best of both worlds.

Just curious on how fast those things can get? What's the 1/4 mile estimate on that thing? It would be sweet to see a GS400 turbo charged.

It's a 98 GS300 which is running the 6 cyclinder; I heard it's the same as the Supra. I'm not too familiar w/ the Toyota/Lexus series but I heard that the enginer does have the ability to produce alot of power. I don't know the 1/4 times or definite whp as it's still WIP for him.

I think it's the 2JZ ... I remember seeing the model # on the engine on Friday.

    Update

He got his car dynoed today and it put down 290whp & 272ft/lbs. None of us were happy as it's "supposed" to put down 350whp +\- but there some real tunning issues; his Engine Management is really new so it's FTM. He'll need to go back in a few weeks when someone who actually knows how to tune the Engine Management to hopefully obtain the rest of the whp as it's running really rich.

i had a tanabe srm and sold it after a week, looked too ricey imho. the canister is too big (same size as the ones they use for supra srm catback) and looks like the cheap ones that you find on ebay, but the exhaust did sound good.
