WRX vs E36 M3: Walked his arse from a roll!

Well guys,

Here's what happened. I was on the Highway and I see in the far left lane a White E36 (Last Gen) M3, the 240 HP coupe version. Anyway I drive by him and proceed to cruise normally until it I hear him get on it a bit and I hear him drop down a gear (car stutters for a bit and the tone of the engine revs up and become noticeably louder... I, in turn, drop to fourth, at about 85 MPH, at which point we both floor it, immediately I start walking him farely easily to about 115 MPH, at which point I had put a car lenghth and a half on him. I was stoked, he drove by and we gave each other a thumbs up, he had one passenger, I had none.

All I have is a MBC @16psi. 4th is feeling pretty strong, even though its tall...this MBC has helped a lot in top end. Anyway, I was surprised I pulled that hard, but I guess I had the weight advantage. Anyway I was please with my WRX

I suggest you get an uppipe, downpipe, and EGT gauge. Dyno results on Sports compact magazine showed 18 lbs-ft of torque gain with downpipe alone. Uppipe resulted in 5 hp gain.

thanks for the tip. i was thinking my next mods would be a DP/UP...I imagine that with my MBC @16psi would get me somewhere around 260 peak HP.

I was a bit surprised, but it happend. Like I said, he had one pass, so overall my car weighed about 300 lbs lighter....

It could have been an automatic (?)

I've run a few around here. I run 15psi (otherwise stock) and I can hold my own if they are stock. I used to have a 98 M3 (5spd) and an 01 M Roadster, the bimmers don't really get into their own until 100+. When my rex was stock I got tooled by a M3 from 80+.

Same here. A friend that I work with has a '98 M3. He hasn't done anything to it yet (unless the previous owner has chipped it) but getting on the freeway together, he would pull no matter how hard I tried, until now. With the last addition of my UniChip, he no longer pulls on me anymore and the tables are turned.

I've had talks with him though and I am curious if his car was previously chipped, because I've raced other M3's with my 3000GT and they weren't as fast as his. Granted, he is a very good driver and it is a stick, but still. The 0-60 times that he pulled on my G-Tech, are a better than Motortrend can get on the car? How can that be?

Probably better tires. I think mags use stock tires when testing. Tires matter A LOT.

i guess it could have been an auto, but i could tell it downshifted, are thry tiptronic? anyway, i was happy to walk an m3 regardless.

My friend has one ('99) with just a Dinan CAI. On the street he killed me and he ran a 14.00 at the track. I love those cars.

I believe it. Don't the manual M3s trap in the mid/high 90s? and autos in the mid 90s?

the magazines say 100 mph at 14.0 i have heard of a few tick less for stock m3's but i personaly couldn't do 14 flat. i dont have much drag practice. i dont know what autos do. 5 gear pulls like a mofo
