Sorry for my ignorance, but why is it that the exhaust tone of a WRX sound like a V8? is it b/c it has a Boxer engine?![]()

Yea, mine doesn't sound like a V8 at all. Maybe a mini v8? lol I would say V8s have their own deeper sound though. Inline 4s produce higher pitch then our motors which are higher pitched than v8s. I would have to listen to a V6 to compare it to that.
Anyone that says a boxer 4 sounds like a V8 hasn't heard enough V8's.![]()
They don't sound like an inline 4, but they sound more like that than they do a V8.
Um...v-8's? Maybe a SMALL v-8 from back in the 50's like a 279 ci or something...It has no where near the same note as a 302, 305, 331, 350, 351, 390,396, 442, 440, 427-29. Heck it doesnt even sound like a 281 or a 347 (now I'm talking EFI...DOHC and LS-1). Oh well....just my thought...maybe i've grown up around to many "muslce cars".![]()

Isn't this the wrong forum? But anyway...I thought it was a combo of the flat 4 and the unequal length headers.

It actually sounds more like a v8 truck. It's deeper than an inline 6 or inline 4 but not as deep as a hemi,302,350 etc. Under WOT I think is sounds alot like a 4 or 6 cyl.
I think it sounds like a misfiring v-6. Or maybe a Harley.

I think WRX's sound like boxer/flat/horizontally opposed 4's.Maybe because that's what they are...deep, distinctive sound.

I think that the WRX exhaust sounds kinda like those small V8's with alot of horsepower...i dunno its just very unique. I love it!
I think it sounds a bit like a v-twin.
Back on topic....the WRX/STi's sound like V8's(especially with aftermarket turbo backs) because of the nature of it's unequal length headers. Equal length headers tend to smooth out that boxer rumble(some go even as far as calling it 'Honda-esque' but it's not annoying IMO, just a cleaner, smoother sound without the pops and harsh rumble), but the lumpy drone is still there because that's how the Subie boxers sound like.

Definately sounds more like a v-twin cruiser. Mostly because of the engine layout since porsches also sound somewhat similar but fuller, only b/c they have more cylinders.
ha, i've had people ask if i had a V8 many times, but my exhaust is really deep, and pretty darn loud too.

You wouldn't believe this, but I was at a local impreza hangout several months ago and we heard a "V8 musclecar" roll by. All of us turn to look and it was actually a Honda Accord!lol I don't know what exhaust he had on, but it definately sounded like a V8

All of the guys there thought it was a V8 before we looked to see what it actually was. And everybody had the same thought:
"Oh sh**, it's a Honda!" lol![]()
