    WRX vs. 540i

Coming home from work this morning, passed a black 540i on the highway. I really don't know a lot about these, I would say it was at least a '99. As soon as I passed him he switched lanes and matched my pace. He followed for a few miles and when traffic opened up he moved over to the slow lane and punched it. We were going about 70, I threw it in 3rd and floored it. He was at my back door when we started, when we stopped I was going 120 and he was about 4 car lengths back. He stayed with me up to about 80 and then I just started pulling. He didn't let off either, I had the windown down and could hear his motor. Anybody know what the top end is like on one of thse cars?

i'll be the first to say that if indeed it was a 99' 5.40 that you raced you got LUCKY. they have a 4.4l v8 pusing 282hp...and as everyone knows the topend on the bimmers are excellent. i cant quite remember what they trap at but for a big sedan it is pretty respectable. i know that they do the 1/4 at about the same as a stock wrx (14.4ish) but the trap speed is a lil higher. more than likely you raced an automatic which is going to hinder it significantly. good kill whatever model it was though, chances are it costed alot more than the scoobie

Thanks I've got the basic bolt on's like MBC, up pipe, turbo back...I'm sure that helped my chances. After I slowed down he came up beside me, I gave him a thumbs up but he just stared at me. I don't think he liked being beaten by a Subaru.

this surprises me...these cars run very well on the highway, and WRX's certainly are not top end cars...Maybe he left it in 6th? LOL

YES THIS WOULD CALL FOR A BS FLAG...

Back in 98 or 99, there was a 0-150-0 test for one of the big car magazines (R&T, motortrend, C&D).

    The 540's raw stats are 0-60 in 5.4 , 1/4 in 13.8

Basically the BMW had enough balls in 0-150 test, to walk by the Z28SS (13.3@107) at 120mph, this was from a stop... And if these sleek biatches can reel in an LS1, there AINT NO WAY, a wrx is gonna stay in front of it from a 70 roll.

You must consider that what you saw could have beena 530, or 525, or maybe the Bimmer owner was just playing, not racing.

Im gonna try and find this article, it had tuners and manufacturer's 0-150-0

too much models between the E39 5-series. My brother has a 97 528i it looks the same as the 97 540i my old neighbor has across the street other than some minor detail on the outside.

if the one you saw does not have those "angel eye" headlight it could've been the 97-2000 528 or 540. It it does have the "angel eye" it could've been 01-03 525, 530, or 540.

it be helpful if you can describe what things you've noticed on the car.

anywayz, FUNNY story around where I go to school. There's a modded 525 which I've seen even before the guy started to mod his car. Then there's one day I saw the 525 badge dissapear on the car, and the next day I passed it it had a 540 badge. I knew it was the same car because of the guy and basically all his mods are distinctive, so just for being a jackass that I am, I rolled down the window and said "NICE 525, I saw you a couple time around school, but what's with the 540 badge?? Mind if I take a look under the hood" The guy rejected the idea and had a embrassed look on his face and just couple days later, the 540 badge was gone.
Nothing but good ol' replicas...on my good ol' poser c240

Here's a pic of what the car looked like, the website said this one was a '97. And it did have a 540 badge on the back, the car looked stock so I'm guessing it was a real 540. This is no BS. He might not have put it in the right gear, but why did he follow me to 120 if he wasn't racing? If we were both going 70 when I hit the gas, he would have been 15 car lengths behind me when I got to 120, not 4.

The data quoted appears to be for an M5, not a 540. 540's are nowhere close to the numbers quoted.

No, the numbers are quite accurate. Here are some stats for a 2001 540:

    Car-Stats.com Report for 2001 BMW 540i
    Obtained from C&D September, 2001
    0-60: 5.7 Transmission: Automatic
    1/4 Mile: 14.3
    1/4 Speed: 97

The manual 6 speed would obviously be a little bit faster, so the numbers were very accurate indeed.

    edit:

for comparison, the M5 of the same year:

    Car-Stats.com Report for 2001 BMW M5
    Obtained from MT March, 2001
    0-60: 4.8 Transmission: Manual
    1/4 Mile: 13.1
    1/4 Speed: 107

    er....the data quoted was:

    "The 540's raw stats are 0-60 in 5.4 , 1/4 in 13.8"

....your numbers are about right, while the ones quoted were wrong.

Having said that, we all know that, of course, BMWs are always faster than anything else because:

    1. They are German
    2. All German cars go really fast at high speeds
    3. In addition to being German, it's expensive
    4. In addition to 1-3, it's "the ultimate driving machine"

perhaps he was just pacing you just to see how far you will go... God knows I do it sometimes....

Doesn't mean you are racing, just having a laugh..

I am not calling BS since I was not there, and you saw what you saw.. But You need more mods than you have to successfully engage in a pissing contest against a Bimmer 540 at speed...especially the 6 speed version.

My numbers were, right. The numbers quoted were also right. I quoted the numbers for an automatic. The 6 speed is faster by up to a full half second in the 1/4 and 0-60. His numbers were accurate.

my father has a 2001 540 (with the M spoke wheels like the above pic )

with all the basic bolt ons, i could own the thing most of the time. but after 80mph. the 540 is a BEAST. actually a little scary at times.
