Having driven both I can say that a 740i is a genuine slug, while an M5 is pretty quick. A friend has an Evo and his father has both a 993 and 996 turbo. Interestingly, the Evo is faster than both Porsches in any situation with corners. I would imagine that a good handling WRX with reasonable HP would be a formidable opponent as well.

As an aside, I just had a nice race along the top of the hills here with a normally aspirated 996 and a 318i. The 318 was kinda outclassed, but handled pretty well. Since the 996 was behind me it was hard to tell for sure, but it seemed like I could add distance between us when I really tried. The WRX's ability to put power down early and hard is a huge advantage on twisty roads with bumps and such. All in all, big fun. Still looking for an E46 to humiliate!

well i think that the power out of the corners comes from the rally-style gearing that our cars enjoy...although this kinda kills us for highspeed endeavors, i really don't seem to mind nor care considering i have the most fun in the twisties anyways!

When I was stationed at Aviano AB, Italy the local chapter of the Porsche club had a auto-x style rally on the airbase. When they broke for lunch, I was lucky enough to get a ride with a guy that owned a Ruf 930.

It was red (of course), and had boost adjustment knob on the dash. The owner said the hp ranged from 300+ at minimum boost to "cylinder melting" 450ish at max boost. When he accelerated from a stop sign it pulled so hard I had trouble catching my breath.

It looked a little like this picture:

A Ruf 930, eh? Awesome. Nothing like taking an excellent car and making it even even quicker!

I always have trouble convincing myself that the porsche turbos I see on the road several times a week are so damn fast. In my book, it's the fastest car that can be commonly seen on public roads. love it

yeah, serious...it's too bad that they (at least the ones i have seen) rarely open it up WOT...even if for a few seconds...well, i guess if they do that for a few seconds they'd be at freeway speed on a surface street

I know one that got 410 whp with a reflash only(600 bucks). They are faster than you think they are.

My uncle has one and let me drive it around over the weekend while I watched his kids. The car pulls so hard I thought my retinas were going to detach. There is power anywhere in the RPM range in any gear. You stomp on the gas, and next thing you know you are flying at 100+. I don't know how owners of the Turbo don't get tickets daily. There is never enough road with its acceleration. After the weekend was over and I drove home in my WRX, it felt like I was driving a minivan. This same uncle just picked up his new RS6 as well. I can't wait to go babysit for him again. Hmmm, let's see...should I take the Turbo or the RS6?
