    STi vs CLK 55 AMG

Well, I was driving my friend back from a Krispy Kreme meet on 680 South Bound headed to 280 North Bound. While I was trying to evade all other cars and get away from them in the middle lane, this CLK 55 AMG was moving with me and wouldn't let me merge into the fast lane. I figure he was just being a mean bastage, so I let him go first and go behind him... then as soon as the road cleared up, he gunned it and I was like, "what the hell, let's go!" I dropped into 5th gear at 80 mph and my rpm's shot up to 4K, right in my boost and I gunned it. He couldn't get away from me but I couldn't pass him up. I guess he got scared because he merged back to the fast lane and hit his brakes real fast after we hit 120 with my mirrors whistling.

Well, just thought I'd post about it. Those things are fast!

I don't mean to kill the vibe or be rude, but that really doesn't sound right...for some reason I just can't see any AMG cars losing to the STI in a top end race...maybe it's just me.

I don't know how an Sti can beat a AMG on top end as well....

I didn't beat him, I kept up. No one really won or lost, but he couldn't get away and I couldn't gain.

    That's what happened.

I believe it. For some reason, folks seem to think we are a bit sluggish at the top end. I would beg to differ as the STi pulls strong all the way to the speed limiter.

I did a check, and these were the only comparison numbers I could pull up.
    STi vs CLK 55 AMG
    0-30 mph 1.42 s 1.70 s
    0-40 mph 2.49 s 2.40 s
    0-50 mph 3.39 s 4.00 s
    0-60 mph 4.88 s 5.10 s
    0-70 mph 6.19 s 7.10 s
    0-80 mph 8.19 s 8.80 s
    0-90 mph 10.09 s 10.60 s
    0-100 mph 12.49 s 12.80 s

    100 ft 2.59 s @ 40.99 mph 2.80 s
    500 ft 7.13 s @ 73.92 mph 7.50 s
    1320 ft (1/4 mile) 13.36 s @ 102.25 mph 13.70 s @ 103.7 mph

    Adelaide International Circuit
    2:14.0, 2:09.7 - 2:12.9, 2:09.1

Sorry, other than the numbers for Adelaide, couldn't find any specs on the AMG for rolling starts, times between speeds, etc. I believe Adelaide isn't even used as a road coarse anymore. It was about 1.5 miles long, with a 3/4 mile straight on one side. Nice top end track.
I can attest that on a track with that long of a straight, the STi will hit very close to 140 mph, depending on the entrance line to the straight.
Nice catch by the way. I'd love to run against one myself!!

I'm baffled why people think the STi is slow from a roll. We all know that poor gearing and smallish turbo doom the WRX's top end, but the STi has more displacement, variable valve timing, bigger turbo and better gearing. STi owners can get their cars to trap higher at the expense of ET, but that kind of defeats the purpose of drag racing.

My honest opinion? The car is fast as sh*t, stops on a dime and handles like mad and people are not willing to give it the credit it deserves because they paid significantly more for a car that offers similar performance. Bummer for them.

Why cant people believe it? The new model CLK isnt S/C like all the other AMG's. It has good hp, but not like the S/C models.

It depends how you look at it. For example, compare how long it takes for the Sti to go from 70 to 100 mph (12.49 - 6.19 = 6.3s) in the above data. Now do the same for the CLK (12.8 - 7.1 = 5.7s). That's a 0.6s difference, which is about 6 carlengths at those speeds.

Realistically though, the result of 70-100 mph race will depend on a lot of other factors, like reaction time, gearing/rpms, etc.

It was still fast. Maybe I reacted slowly, but I don't know. It's a fast car. Fun times. I should post about my encounter with a Z28 and another encounter with a Supra TT.
