The Mini is a blast to drive but seems to have some reliablity issues so far, not sure how major the problems are.

GTI is another good choice, but again reliability concerns.

The new Tiburon really isn't a bad car, and comes with one hell of a warranty and Hyundai is making better and more reliable cars every year.

Acura RSX is another, and is certainly a high quality car that will have excellent reliability.

    Celica GT (see above).

Accord coupe with the 4 cylinder (see above)

    Honda Civic (see above)

After he buys it smack him for being a pansy and driving an auto.

I would say a Celica or RSX cause of the reliability.

You can get a new Type S for around 22k, so no need for a used one if he wants an auto.

Does the RSX (non S) have any pickup with an auto?

I was thinking the Mazda6 is a nice car if he can get a deal on one for around $20K. Does anyone know how the 6cyl is with the Manumatic tranny? I know its not a coupe.

Is the Tiburon quick stock? I mean 0-60 in under 7 sec?

Is anyone modding the Tiberon GT yet? Performace wise?

How about a used WRX Auto? 'Course, thats 4 doors, so it's out. Might be hard to find though. You did say easily modded, and for that amount of money, to get "appreciable" mods (ie...something that you can actually feel on the butt dyno) you will be limited to a turbo. Try a VW, any turbo 4 banger made by ford, and any older chrysler turbo product (Omni, GLHS, Daytona, etc).

For that matter, might as well get a used Maxima. A 2001 can be had for the price easily, and with +250 horses and good interior, you'd be stylin and quick. Quite a bit quicker than most NA 4 cylinders for that price, and the mod costs are about on par with most other cars. Just a thought. Oops..again a 4 door. Sorry.

For that amount of money, I'd probably shoot for an Accord V6. However, without a manual, they aren't all that quick.

That automatic and 2 doors is going to limit your choices. 'sides, far as I'm concerned, one of the worst noises in the world is something with a performance exhaust, 4 cylinders, and an automatic as it's shifting. Just a bogey sound.

    Domestically speaking

Used Pontiac Formula/TransAms with an LS1 that are only a year or two old can be had for under $20,000. The interior isn't fantastic compared to most imports, but it's nice looking for a domestic. T-tops don't leak anymore like they did in the 80's, and are unique compared to other vehicles. Automatics are still a mid 13 second car. < $3000 in modifications (headers, cutout, torque converter, shift kit, trans cooler, drag radials) can have it running low-mid 12's without nitrous, generally speaking. Low to mid 20's for mpg depending on your driving style. Traction control and snow tires to get you through the winter if need be...

Quality compared to the imports will likely be a bit lower, and it's not an easy car to drive for most people who are used to an import (low seating postion, long hood, easy to spin out in the wet), but it's very liveable for a daily driver, and not much out there that will show it taillights for the money. It's usually a love/hate car. I love mine and hate mine at the same time, actually.

It's worth checking out just to help narrow your friend's search.

The non S auto is peppy at best.

The Mazda6 is a great car as well but you said 2 door, I've only driven the 5 speed but considering it's a V6 I would imagine the auto is better on that than some of the other cars mentioned, he also might want to check out the new Mazda3.

As for the Tiburon I don't know how fast the auto is but the MT is decent and in auto version may be better than some of the others mentioned as an AT. Yes there are mods for the new Tiv available.

By the way your friend is one pain in the ass He isn't a car enthusiast but wants something fast, wants to mod, and has to have a 2 door, and then he goes and ruins it all with an auto...
