Doesn't the Merkur share the same powertrain as the Mustang SVO - a turbocharged I-4? A friend of mine has an SVO, and it's very mod friendly.

yeah it shares the same engine as the SVO also the Turbo T-bird comes with the same engine. Its a 2.3 liter 4cylinder turbo charged , the t-bird had 190hp and i think 210 torque. I am pretty sure the SVO due to a better exhaust had 200hp not sure of the torque though. My 1988 T-bird turbo coupe 5 speed ran a 16.3@87mph , it was road tested by a few mags from 16.3-16.4.

    Useless trivia:

In the UK, the Merkur was sold as the Ford Sierra. The version Dan raced was called the XR4i (the 'i' standing for 'injection' - apparent a big deal), but was normally aspirated in the UK.

They also had an XR3i based around the Escort platform (similar to the Ford Escort sold here), and an XR2i based around the Fiesta platform (identical to Ford Fiesta sold here). The XR2i was actually a pretty fun car with decent performance.

The Sierra XR4i later evolved into the Sierra Cosworth, which was a pretty formidable car when tuned. I believe it was the turbocharged incarnation. This eventually became the Saphire Cosworth which was available with an AWD powertrain.

I often notice vehicles that are not only marketed under a different model designation abroad, but are also completely rebranded with a different manufacturer name. The Pontiac LeMans is another great example; being marketed very successfully in the UK as the Vauxhall Astra.

I just checked on the stats for the last gen of UK Escort Cosworth, and the numbers are surprisingly comparable to the WRX. It achieves this performance on only 0.8bar of boost. Of course, it's only a FWD. A good friend of mine had the prior gen 4 Escort RS (turboed), and the thing had horrifying torque-steer.

[Edit: Actually the Cosworth appears to be rear-biased 4WD ! The Escort RS, was however FWD]

The mear word torque-steer brings back memories of my Talon
TSI with HKS turbo upgrade and greddy turbo back exhurst. It is
a torque steer monster. WRX launchs straight like an arrow,
    love it
