WRX vs Modified 99 Camaro SS

Last night I did a little grudge racing against a buddy of mine with a 99 Camaro SS 6MT with the following modifications:

cam (cam is 224/224 .561/.561 114 LSA), SLP headers, LS6 intake, Descreened MAF, fasttoys ram air, air lid, K&N, cut-out with highflow cats, 10.5MM plug wires, NGK plugs, Ferrea intake & exhaust valves /w 3 angle valve job, ARE ported oil pump, subframes, Spohn torque arm /w front drive shaft loop, Moser 12 bolt with 4:10 gears, and Nitto DR's

The weather was very bad for running good times (90 degrees with 95% humidity) but it was fun nonetheless. He was having a hard time hooking up and I had some misfiring problems that really slowed me down in 4th gear (the car would buck pretty severly and I threw a misfire code)

    Here's how the slip looks:

    Me
    .6742
    1.7704 60'
    8.0309@ 87.75 1/8th
    12.5774 @ 108.27 1/4th

    Him
    .6293
    2.073 60'
    8.3297 @ 88.37 1/8th
    12.7447 @ 112.58 1/4th

I won, but it was close. Maybe 2 car lengths if that. To be fair, he did run a 12.58 earlier in the night. According to him, he was 2-3 mph and tenths off his usual times due to the weather and I believe him.

I think my car has an 11 second run (No Nitrous) in it with new plugs and good weather. I'm still using the stock rims and tires as well.

Basically. The run before that I ran a 12.5 @ 109.9. I'm not too impressed with these numbers though, because I know the car can do a whole lot better.

Today while getting lunch I got more misfire codes and stumbling. I'm going to pull the plugs and see how they look. My guess is that they're fouled pretty badly.

Yea, I would check the plugs and wires. Can't your UTEC help you out in this type of situation? (ie. logging)

I had the same misfire problem myself. After I had my car tuned it started misfiring on cylinder #3 so I pulled the plug and found that it was loose but I checked it out to see if it was fouled. It looked fine as far as the electrode so I just put it back in and made sure it was tight. Even after this I still had a misfire. So I finally pulled the plug to find out that the ceramic was cracked in several places which would explain why I had a misfire. I changed out the plugs and I ended up with a misfire on cylinders #1 and #2. I am baffled at this point as to what was wrong. I pulled the plugs checked them over and everything was fine visually so I used a feeler gauge to regap the plugs to be precise. Even after this I still had misfires on #1 and #2. After doing some logging while it misfired I found that I was hitting IDC's of 110%. I leaned it out and everything has been fine since. I would say that you either have a bad plug or your plugs are worn out. I have found that plugs really make a difference when running a highly modified tuned car.

Cool man, thanks for the heads up. A Supra owner friend of mine told me that he saw in person a fresh set of spark plugs give a 40whp increase on his car. Obviously, his old plugs were toast!

I hate being a pessimist, but....

On Drag radials, he should be pulling 1.8-1.9 60's. And with those mods, he should be a low 12 sec. car, with DR's atleast. Most bolt on LS1s run high 12s on street tires, with a cam, tuning and 4.10s he should be in the low 12s. Don't get me wrong, much respect to your car, sounds fast as hell, but a cammed, bolt on LS1 with 4.10s and DR's SHOULD pull you. Guess you're the better racer.

    Nice kill.

    Thumbs up

Yeah, he definitely needs to utilize those DRs.

I have less go-fast mods and I ran a 12.7 at 114 through full exhaust with a crappy launch on stock tires. Our cams are also pretty identical.

He should be hitting 1.7 60fts on Nittos. Especially if he has a 12-bolt rearend.

Nice Race regardless. Keep up the good work silverscooby .

Oh c'mon, be nice. IF the LS1 had DR's then he may have won, but what IF silverscooby wasn't still using those HORRIBLE RE92's? Or what IF he wasn't having misfire probs.
I think it's a fair comparison with how things were. Of course, Camaro's can be made wickedly fast but a 353 whp(with race fuel) WRX is rather insane IMO.
I guess I feel it's just not fair to say the Camaro should have won with different tires, because we could also say that the WRX should have won by a lot more with even some half decent tires, much less some really good sticky ones.

    Ah well....

    Shawn ,

I don't think big turbo WRX owners want stickier tires. The stock tires do a very good job already. A little spin will save your clutch and tranny .

If you read again, I said that all the cars there were down a couple tenths and a few mph. In fact, I know with a new set of plugs and better weather (my boost was only hitting 22psi as opossed to 25psi) I would have run low 12's myself.

I find it funny how all my domestic friends thought that he should have walked me..... but he didnt. On my other run (a 12.5@109) I also beat a car "I shouldnt have."

First off, he WAS on DR's, right? That's what the story sounded like to me, which is why I thought he couldn't launch very well. So I'm not saying he woulda won with better tires, I'm saying he didn't know how to use the tires he already had on.

Look, don't get me wrong, a 350+ awhp WRX is a quick car. I'm sure you could, and did, take this guy's car. All I'm sayin is on DRs, the guy should be pullin atleast 1.8s-1.9s if not better. You guys should know more than anyone that launching is huge in drag racing.
