    Evo VIII - first encounter

While I wouldn't go so far as to call it a kill because of the circumstances, I can say for sure that I'm not all that worried about the new Mitsu.

Was on a 4 lane road, in the left lane behind a truck, saw a Lancer coming up behind me in the other lane. When he was about 20 yards back, i noticed a huge FMIC in the grille... could it be?

It must be my exhaust, but I never even have to instigate, it seems... He hit it hard just as he got even with me, and I did the same an instant later, dropping in behind him. Altezzas, dealer plates... check. It's an evo. After 1-2 seconds, the gap that had opened up between us was closing fast -- no trouble at all reeling him in. I had to back way out of the throttle to keep from driving up his tailpipe. There was traffic up ahead, so we both shut it down at that point.

As I said, I wouldn't call it an outright kill, but I'm now pretty sure what's going to happen when I get one lined up against me. It wasn't nearly as fast as I expected it to be.

Will be interesting to see what Shiv and the others do with it though.

Too bad you guys didnt have more road. I'd expect a VS2 to run away easy after the latest dyno info on the EVO. The EVO VIII is at the top of my most wanted to kill list next is the SRT-4 (as far as new cars go).

duh, that a modded evo would be faster then a stock wrx. but the stage 2 he has would require a modded one to beat him probably

Worried? No, not yet - I'd say it'll be some time before enough tuning is done on the car to make it a threat.

Honestly, I was expecting a LOT more... But I will say that I think it looks like the car has enormous potential. That FMIC is HUGE, for example - I'd imagine in a few months there will be some very fast ones out there.

The shame is the way that dealers are gouging for them. Sadly, it looks like the STi will be the same.

    JT,

Your setup is good for mid to high 12s. You are aware that the Evo is good for mid to high 13s don't you?

How fast did you expect it to be?

Having not heard any performance estimates before all this, I'll admit to not having based my guess on anything other than people guessing that the 271hp rating would be way low.

Based on what I'd heard in some friendly bench racing sessions, I would have guessed very low 13s. Guess I was wrong - that was, more or less, my point.

The car's engine is the 4G63, which is the same engine as turbo DSM's i believe. It seems to me like parts for those cars would be able to swap right over onto the Evo, assuming they would be better than the stock components. I don't think we'll have to wait long before there are plenty of mods for this car.

Can somebody clear up about how different the evo's engine is from the DSM's?

I was hoping low 13s on the Evo but its most likely not going to happen. But you know what, who knows. I'd like to see some 1/4 mile runs on a fully broken in Evo VIII.

Even if it did run low 13s, with your setup, you would have still pulled on him.

only the evo 1-3 engine is the same as the eclipse in america. evo 4+ the head is reversed with a tad beefier internals (rods), compression ratio, cams, etc.

it's a very proven and very stout 4cyl engine

I think they will be better, but not by much, its still the same displacement, its just they have a much, much, much better gearbox witch will permit them much more power.
