Also, is anyone else concerned about what will happen to all the testosterone-drunk high school kids when they get their hands on a 215+hp FWD car? It seems like a potential disaster in the making! I mean, at least AWD can save your butt once in a while.
I see so many high school guys and girls running around in LS1 WS6 Trans Ams and Camaro SS's in the north Dallas suburban area. Hell, some of them even have mods! YOu wanna talk about a disaster waiting to happen (can you say spin out?). But ya, I see what you mean. I can see some of them trying to do WRX cornering maneuvers in their SRT-4's.

Yeah...heaven forbid they try and corner like a WRX in a better handling car

Hehe. I'm impressed. But, then again, if you know me you knew I would be IMNSHO, the reliability issues that come to play will be with body panels, interior, electronics, etc. and not drivetrain. Dodge has shown in the past that they know what it takes to build a stout turbo engine, and I don't doubt that they have done it again. They are making a big statement with this car, and they aren't taking the SRT-4's durability lightly.

Yeah, the suspension on the WRX is a little soft in stock form. After watching the SRT-4 on motortrend last night I laughed my A$$ off when they were spinning one wheel around corners. I'd take a AWD drift any day over that ridiculous display of understeer and traction loss.

It would have been too expensive to make it rwd. It was much cheaper to add power to the existing platform.

As would I. I just thought his comment was funny. The SRT-4 pulls higher skidpad and slalom numbers, and I'd bet turns faster track times...spinning understeer or not.

I *know* that. That's why I posted what I did. It was to all the past and future "but it's just a Neon" responses.

interesting how motorweek could only squeeze a 14.9 max out of the car with drag radials.

i'd think the car and the wrx would be a driver's race. with mods it'd go faster, but it'd always have that fwd problem on the launch.

You are correct. Top Gear got a 4 second better lap time out of the SRT-4, than the WRX.

The car is nice for what it is, but I doubt you would see 13.7 with just new tires. I will wait for more reviews and time slips to come in before I belive that. I have seen or read three reviews of this car so far, 2 of them said it gets high 14's and one said low 14's. We will see I guess. My one problem with the car is they seem to have cut some corners in order to get it under that 20k price point. I guess they just wanted the title of fastest car under 20k more then they wanted a quality car with normal extras.

Actually they didn't really cut any corners here IMO. They just went back to the way ChryCo used to do things. They took an already cheap and light car (Satellite for instance) and stuck a powerful and strong engine in it (a la RoadRunner).

All of the neon's current pitfalls will most undoubtedly still remain. However, I believe the driveline will surprise you. They were smart and outsourced the tranny to Getrag (some don't like, but trust me...this is a good thing). They already know how to build a bullet proof low compression bottom end (a la turboII). The corners that have been cut were already cut in the neon platform IMO, but I don't believe the critical driveline components were left lacking.

One man's opinion (It just happens to be right LOL ),

I wasnt questioning why they made it fwd I know its cheaper. But making a car as cheaply as possibly has never been my only reason to buy a car. If they would have chosen somthing other than fwd and added a few other things (limited slip, etc...) I may have been trading in the wagon if they sold it for 22-23k.

Wow I gotta say, that thing is impressive. What's up with the funky dyno curves though? They look like Initial D mountain pass routes...hehe

I doubt it'll be long before some performance shops get their hands on some, and you'll be seeing them in mags and T.V. shows all over. You can bet that we'll see fully streatable 10 sec Neons in the future.

I wonder how long until somebody comes up with an LSD for this car? Would be a high priority mod.
Hell I remember my bone stock 93 hp '86 Civic Si had too much power for an open diff. This thing has got to be a nightmare for wheelspin exiting corners.

I believe I read somewhere that TurboXS was starting some research on it a few months ago, so that wouldn't surprise me
