I seriously considered an ION Redline before buying my WRX. There are lots of instances of the ION RLs and Cobalt SS(2.0L supercharged, not the 2.4L NA) putting down 200+ at the wheels in stock form. GM rates that 2.0L SC at 205 hp at the crank. That is apparently significantly under rated. Most of them must be putting out around 230, maybe a little more, at the crank.

And, there is a GM upgrade kit with a smaller SC pulley, larger fuel rail and pump, and new ECU mapping that pushes the HP and torque numbers way up. Add the limited slip diff and an engine brace to reduce wheel hop and the Cobalts/Ion RLs are quick little buggers.

The Cobalt SS is known to be underrated from the factory. They are in the same vein as the SRT-4: Cheap speed kid cars. They under rate them from the factory so the younglings can afford the insurance. Im not sure how well they handle but I know for a fact torque steer is HORRIBLE on them, especially after mods. I talked to a guy who told me he changed the pulley on his SC and he almost crashed into a wall the first time he floored it after the mod due to the torque steer.

Cobalt's are a joke. I saw a guy in a Chevy HHR wagon with a lightly modded engine take a stock SS

That was not my experience test driving them. The IONs and Cobalt SS have equal length half shafts that eliminate a lot of the typical FWD torque steer. The chasis and suspension have received pretty good reviews. I have not driven a modded version, but in stock form, the ones (ION and Cobalt) that I test drove pulled straight. Maybe there was a tire or alignment problem with your friends?

And, as for an HHR beating up on a Cobalt.... you have to look closely at the Cobalts. They put the 'SS' tag on two versions. One is a naturally aspirated 2.4L motor that puts out 170 hp (I think). The other is the real hot dog with a 2.0 super charged plant which is available with a limited slip front end. They can look nearly identical. One is much faster than the other. If an HHR beat up on a 2.0L SC Cobalt, I'd start looking at the drivers.

I read somewhere that the internals on Cobalts start going out pretty quick.. as in with only a decent HP gain you have to start upgrading them. Just what I read though.. and I don't remember all the details.

The only thing that wins when a Colbalt SS Races a SRT-4 is science.
