Thumbs up 04 WRX lost to a ford escort...

My girlfriend, and I own both of the vehicles in this post, and were both driving them for this race.

    The vehicles:

2004 WRX, 2.0L Turbo, 4EAT, 93K miles, no mods, 1 bag of launndry in the back weighing est. 25 lbs.

1994 Ford Escort GT, 1.8L N/A, 5 speed, 161K miles, timing advanced +2 degrees, est. 125 lbs weight reduction, home-made short ram intake, 2 baskets of laundry in the back weighing est. 35 lbs.

    Conditions:

Outside temperature 45 degrees, Humidity 40%, Dry, Long straightaway on highway side by side.

    How it went down:

Me driving Escort GT, girlfriend driving WRX line up for a 60 roll on highway. 3 beeps and we make a run for it. I immediatly pulled her to my rear quarter panel when I downshifted into 3'rd and she floored the automatic. The WRX stayed right next to my rear end from 60-110, I am exhausting 4'th gear at about 112+ mph and 6,300 rpm's I shifted into 5'th as and the rpm's increased, but the speedometer stops around 115-117 so I can't read anything after that point. I kept accelerating, until I redlined in 5'th gear at which time I had pulled a car length on the WRX with my funky little escort.

When we arrived home, I kinda smirked as my girlfriend asked me, WTF was under my hood? Knowing I hadn't modded it, wondering how the heck I beat her. She asked me how fast I was going, because she said she couldn't catch up to me at 130 mph and let off the gas in the WRX at 130. Like I mentioned earlier, I can't read any speed above 117 or so, so obviously I was doing 130+ but I couldn't tell you the speedo don't keep up with the RPM's in 5'th.

Anyway: It was 100% fair, and both parties acknowledge it as it being so. For last night.. Escort 1 > WRX 0.

(She said the car hesitated for about 10 seconds before downshifting, and maintains that had it downshifted sooner, it wouldn't have gone in my favor.)

Regardless of the delay, or no delay in the WRX downshifting, which I don't doubt at all, I drive it too so I realize sometimes it's a little hesitant. I have 100 less HP, so it's an amazing victory regardless. Next time one of us will bring a video tape!

Good night all, and happy holidays! - Brett & Ashley

I've got to tell you that the top speed of that GT couldn't be much more than 110 MPH, and with over 150k miles it's got to be getting a little tired. 2 degrees and a little weight reduction isn't going to buy you another 20 MPH. Either it's been modified more than you're saying or this story is pure BS.

    I'm confused...

How can we have a thread claiming a victory over a Viper, and then a thread claiming an Escort GT victory over a WRX?

I've got to tell that I've looked all over the net for the factory claimed top speed on these, and I can't find it. I realize they're light (2,500) and it looks to be a decent motor, but I still have trouble believing 125 MPH.

Damn this thread for making me research an Escort.

I'm not lying to you guys, I have a video of one of my more recent 0-60 runs, and belive me when I tell you.. my car surprises EVERYBODY who pulls up next to it. Next time me and my g/f go out in seperate cars, I will bring the video camera, and mount it in my escort to get a good shot of the race. Heres a couple videos of the Escort just playing around:

0-60 race, with my friends 04 supercharged mini cooper - Escort > Cooper S 0-60: (He caught up and passed me only in 3'rd gear, naturally)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiG48LeFlkc

Heres my "funny" 0-60 time video, in the Escort:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLYwn77HiPc

It's loud inside the car, so when I make this new video, you're going to have to watch your volumes!

As far as top speeds go, the fuel cut is supposed to kick in, at 7,200 rpms or so I read in the manual, but I have eaten up 7,600 rpm's and not seen a rev limiter / fuel cut yet. I do not know how accurate the speedo is, in the EGT or the WRX, but I do know I've had it past the 120 mark, and dipping down into a blank space before when going down a hill trying to max the car out. I wouldn't be surprised though, if it was inaccurate like the gas gauge is.

I am going to get punished for this thread, it's blasphemous to the entire communiity

I do own both the cars, so it's all good they both have their own way of driving, and being driven. Some people like to think most races are about the driver skill, but it doesn't take skill to floor a gas pedal in an automatic, so there was no driver error here.

I belive driver error, is only displayed in races where two vehicles have equal weight, power, and drivetrain. (Which doesn't happen that often unless racing one of our own.) I do certainly belive in driver skill level though. I'm just an "average" driver when it comes to driving manual.
