Yes, I have a friend who runs a shop that specializes in the Merkur (and TT Vipers) - the 2.3liter can be a beast. Also, they are RWD not AWD so you're at a disadvantage from a roll.

Thanks for the info! I knew the car was rear wheel drive, I just didn't realize how fast they could be.

My uncle has an RX4 Ti. I dont know what all he's done but Its got a bigger turbo, big shot of NOS to spool it and a water to air intercooler. He said something about the motor from an SVO mustang? I dont know if its the same motor or if thats what he put in there?

Funny story my old roommate came home one day and was like, "Dude I just got my ass whooped." I said, "What was it" He was like, "A Rawty or something like that, I've never seen one." I just and was like, "dude my uncle just whooped your ass"!

Imagine the bastard offspring of a Ford's Mustang and Ford's Escort.

Same engine as the legendary SVO mustang (turbocharged 2.3l), the cosworth variant (sierra - see pic below)was very popular at the time and still has a cult following.

Well just looked up google and I guess the RX4ti does have the same motor as the SVO. Sweet. I'll have to see if I can get some pics and ask what he's done to it.

Much like the early Capris, Ford imported them from Germany. They were bred for WRC. I think some of the AWD models may have made it over as well. I'm not a Ford guy but I wouldn't mind having one. And a turbo'd Cosworth Vega...

It is also the same motor as the 87-88 turbo t-bird, my first car was a 88 turbo b-bird 5 speed. The only difference between the svo and the t bird was a more restrictive exhaust on the t-bird only giving it 190hp and 210lbs of torque. I ran mine bone stock at the track with 135k miles on it and i ran a 16.3@88mph i read a road and track and a car and driver review of the car back from the 80s and one ran a 16.4 the other a 16.3 so i guess i did pretty well.

Thanks for all the input, folks. I think this guy would have taken me if he was tuned a little better. He was running pig rich. I've seen these cars around, and they are usually pretty beat. His looks pretty beat, but it's also pretty fast. Nice sleeper!

There is a 4wd Merkur xr4 ti around here. I'm not sure if it was imported or not, it looked quite old and it was for sale awhile back, but I am certain it was advertised as 4wd and they did make a 4wd variant so I'm not sure if it was a conversion or what... Gotta love the giant stock wing.
