VF34 WRX vs. Mustang LX 5.0 old style

I was driving on highway cruising right around speed limit when all the sudden this old style Mustang 5.0 with Cobra wheels started pacing my car. A guy behind the wheel was probably around 50's.

    Race:
Started in 3rd gear around 55mph and we were dead even until I had to shift into 4th gear. When I shifted into 4th gear, he gained about 1/2 car length because I suck at shifting. I also baby my car so I never bang any gears. I stopped right after I shifted into 4th gear because there were cars ahead of us.

His car sounded really mean/loud with aftermarket exhaust. It was much faster than I thought as my understanding is that old 5.0's traps around 95mph. Can they be made that fast with simple bolt ons?

It was my first race since going stage 4.

If you found an old Fox body, (which is the 5.0 that looks a little like an Escort) that was willing to run, it was surely modded, and probably to a fair extent. Those cars have been around for a while, and the aftermarket is flooded with parts for it.

The problem, (problem?) with Mustangs is that you never really know what your going to get. I guess they are like a box of chocolates...

Heck, if I put the stock wheels back on mine, you wouldn't even have an inkling.... until all you saw was my lisence plate getting smaller...

To answer your question, yes they can be made fast with very little money. I speak from experience. I used to own an 89 lx 5.0. Open up the exhaust, add some gears, and those things will move. I miss that car everyday.

I owned a 1987 Mustang GT and now a 1999 Mustang GT. The old 302's are very very accepting to slight modifications and not to mention light compared to the newer models. Horsepower stock on a Fox chassis is 1987-1992 is 225 hp. 1993 dropped to 205 hp and torque was a modest 300. Swap out heads, upper and lower intakes, exhaust and bolt on a supercharger all for a grand total of a little less than 6k and you are looking at an easy 450-500 rwhp which should put 1/4 mile times somewhere within the mid 11 second range.

You are correct that the 302's top out at a lower speed. But thats what changing the intake helps on them. Adds a lot more top end power.

those old 302 motors are cheap and easy to mod. For the price of going stage 4 on a WRX/STI you could have a 500+ hp F-body with more torque than you could ever dream of on a Subaru motor, and they don't have to baby their transmission. You could do 5000 RPM clutch drops and bang gears on those Mustang transmissions all day long.

they're slow, ugly cars stock, but with a 12-15 year old car, you can pretty much assume its not stock. There are VERY few people that are still interested in buying those F-body cars to run stock.

Mid 14's stock on a nearly 20 year old vehicle isn't exactly what I consider slow...

You gotta remember the fact that technology progresses. 10 years from now the 2006 STI's will be comparatively "slow."

Plus being a Mustang owner those Fox Chassis Mustangs (not trying to be critical but there is no such thing as a Fox body, the chassis code was Fox and it was used for multiple vehicles in the 80's... Mustang, Granada, LTD, etc and F-body refers to the GM pony cars such as the Camaro and Firebird) are highly valued stock rather than modified especially the limited edition models.

The 5.0s are my favorite Stangs and can be made blazing fast without much trouble. I'd love to find one to work on.

Course, they handle like a brick, but that's complaining about a boat that can't fly.

good point. I was starting to feel the same way about my WRX. 5 years ago, it was pretty fast, now everyone's making 300 HP cars that without any mods can blow the doors off a wrx and even an sti.

Eh, IMO there are more ignorant cocky people in the import world than any other. Most have a friend that has a fast car.
