in my opinion, FWD is good until you get to about 180 lb-ft of torque. that's why the Si is still the best driving FWD car out there: there's no torque! the speed comes from horsepower...sounds funny to say, but i-VTEC is actually a pretty good idea when you're building a FWD sports car.

The SRT-4 is a lawsuit and about 300 dead 16 yr olds waiting to happen. monster torque, monster power, aftermarket upgrades straight out of the dealership, uncontrollable FWD, unsafe crash test ratings, at an extremely affordable price. smart guys over at Mopar

I killed some tuna on a roll. Four pages of nonsense. Awesome.

I think a lot of this "dig is better than a roll" crap comes from the fact that we drive AWD cars. The only reason we can beat a lot of the cars that we can is because of the AWD launch advantage. All cars have their strong and weak points, and just because you can have a killer launch, it doesn't necessarily mean your car is faster.

Point in case: 300ZX TT vs STI. A well-running stock TTZ vs a stock STI. Both cars have about the same power figures, the STI is a bit lighter and has AWD to the TTZs RWD. By it's very nature, the TTZ is not a quarter mile car. Due to it's weight (heavy GT car with V6, US cars are T-top only) and drivetrain, an STI will demolish a TTZ from a dig. TTZs are lucky to run high 13s, whereas an STI can hit mid to low 13s all day. That being said, even from like a 20-30mph roll a TTZ will demolish an STI no question. It just has better high-end gearing, more whp, and doesn't automatically lose 1-2 car lengths due to competing against an AWD launch. Same principle against a new 350z or what have you.

I'm not at all saying that racing from a roll is better, far from it. But by nature of driving a AWD car, you have a great advantage from a dig to be faster than cars you wouldn't be able to beat if you had the same drivetrain. WRXs would be 15+ second cars racing Civics and crap without the advantage we have. STIs and Evos would probably be in the 14s with RWD.

Therefore I wouldn't knock people for wanting to run from a roll to even up the odds a little bit.

I never hear most RWD racers *****ing about going from a DIG, it's usually just the FWD kiddies.

Though I have to admit I can't wait until NHRA starts a leauge that they start from a sixty punch.

Even when I get my RWD 240Z all finished, I'll STILL prefer to race from a dig. I'll feel much more satisfied if I smoke an AWD car from a dig in a RWD car, than I would if we raced from a roll. AWD or not, racing from a roll DOES take some of the driver skill out of the equation.
Racing from a roll is like eating Chinese food. It fills you up for a quick moment, but an hour later, you feel empty inside (hungry again).
    Rally starts from a dig.
    F1 starts from a dig.
Drag racing starts from a dig.

    NASCAR starts from a roll.

    See a pattern here?

by the same token non-awd cars with the same power have the advantage from a roll because they're built that way. its just a different tactic to achieve the same thing, speed. awd cars are good at getting up to speed quickly and in stop and go situations. rwd and fwd are good once you're already moving. it bugs me when people say wrx/sti owners are using our awd as a crutch because similarly it can be said that rwd/fwd owners are using their greater whp as a crutch. same thing.
