You really can't use that as an argument cause every single WRX was sold quickly. I know that many were bought just because it was a WRX and didn't matter if it was a hatch or not. It's not like the WRX is a mass produced vehicle. Most are just lucky to get their hands on one.

Not too different. Base tdi's get some items that would be options with the base golf: heated seats, leather steering wheel and shift knob, heated mirrors and washer nozzles, I think base gti's get all those things too. I'm fairly certain my car came with a better stereo than a base golf would have, don't know if that's the same for the gti. They all get cloth seats standard, just with different patterns.

Heated anything doesn't mean **** if you live in So Cal. I hate that we have to buy those to get the sunroof in the new WRX. But I still will...Grr. I haven't used heated seats in any of my last few cars.

But the GTI is really nice, but fwd kills it for me. And the plaid. I like the nostalgia but cannot live with that.

I had a 12' GTI for 2 years, fun DD but it was plagued with issues. I took a trip to the dealer every 3 months. Heated seats have always been pretty useless for me as well...especially when I live in Vegas.

My brother has owned the past 3 generations of GTIs and has always ended up selling them because of the issues he has. Told him to get a WRX last time but he didn't listen. Sold his GTI 3 months ago.

Going by combination of looks, interior and even MPG (especially with a TDI) a VW wins. Reliability, or lack thereof, wipes out all three of those advantages. I like WRX/STi looks (though more racerboy), I can handle plastic interior and low MPG since I have a short commute. I cannot handle a car being the shop all the time. WRX wins.

My vw has thus far been much more reliable than my subaru was. I also see, and I admit this is subjective as well, fewer complaints on the Golf forum I am on related to reliability issues not caused by modding.

I disagree on looks, I definitely liked the exterior of my Rex more than the egg I've got now.

I concur on the level of bias towards VW GTi and the 3 series in car mags..like....every single friggin one...despite long term ownership of these vehicles are miserable due to pricey maintenance. Like everyone knows that...but just blatantly ignores it. Wut.

Additionally, I never considered leasing a vehicle....but that would be exactly what I do with a bmw.

A car mag picking a "euro" car first? No way.

Subaru completely blew it by not having a 2015 Hatch. I just can't get past the looks of WRX Sedan - 2014, 2015.....any year really. Sorry.

I plan on leasing a 2015 golf r in protest to subaru discontinuing the hatch.
Hopefully in 2019 they bring it back or sooner.

Back in 2011 I bought my first WRX, a nice DGM hatch. I test drove a Speed3 and a GTI. I ended up with the WRX mainly because of Subaru's reputation for reliability and resale value, because the Speed3 drove really well, and it was tempting. At the time I had no idea what a huge advantage all wheel drive was in the wet. Once I got used to that tracktion in all conditions, there was no going back. When the new WRX came out I bought one without test driving anything else.

Car magazines only test cars in limited conditions, and they care nothing about reliability or resale value. In that articale they talk about the GTI being a thousand dollars cheaper, but over the course of three to five years the cost of ownership of the WRX would be quite a bit cheaper. And it will always be a hell of a lot more fun in "bad" conditions.
