My car is fast 300 hp...great tune... But I keep getting my ass kicked bad by this stinking old black buick with turbo. Through the grape vine somebody told me it was running methonal and big boost, any suggestions on what I might need to reel him in??? Damn that car fast!
I, in contrast, can't recall a title the Supra has won. I'm sure there's something. I know Toyota homologated the Supra at one point but I suspect its impact wasn't substantial. I'm probably unaware of something or other historic they did though to be honest.
No, I respect what Toyota was trying to accomplish with a limited budget. It was quite an amazing performer for the time in a car costing $30,000. However, I think the car is greatly over-hyped. It was heavy (and it needed to be) to qualify for Group-A homologation in Touring Car racing. Was it a bargain buy? Sure! Was it a Ferrari 512 Testarossa killer? No.
Seems like the new generation thinks it's the "God car" of the tuner types, maybe with the exception of the GTR. Anyhow, to stay on topic a little bit...if I had to choose between a supra and Grand National...it would have to be the GN, I can't get over that death black darth vador look with a turbo that whistles like a mack truck over its deep semi quite exhaust note lol
It was one of the last muscle cars from that whole era...so its pretty much the "latest and greatest" ...from its era. Good luck trying to beat it at what its best at. Grand Nationals are nasty fast. I dont think they're the best looking muscle though lol.
I love the GNX, I'd commute in that no problem! OP you would be better off buying a 4th gen camaro or fox body with bolt ons, spray, and some drag radials rather than spend 3 times as much money trying to build your wrx into a drag car. I also agree the Supras are overrated. It blows my mind that you can pick up a clean MR2 turbo for 5k but base automatic Supras are still pushing $20k+ I still want one though...
I love me a clean Grand National. Ultimate sleeper car because honestly not alot of people know about them, especially the new generation of car enthusiasts. They look heavy, cumbersome, and brutish but they can be made stupid fast.
My friend was in his WRX messing with people, hes kind of a stupid kid. Anyway, we were on state street which is a common "streetdrag" street (I DO NOT support "street racing" btw, and my friend knows it and will do it just to piss me off sometimes). Anway, he had beaten a few Civics and thought he was hot stuff. We pulled up next to a black GN with tinted windows. He was like "lets smoke this grandpa car!" I sat there quietly smiling, because I knew very well that it was not in fact a grandpa car.
So light goes green, my friend stomps on it, and I don't even think the GN noticed us until we took off like that, and then the guy was like "oh no you dont" because suddenly our ears are popping from the sound of a wide open turbo V6 and the guy flies by like we were standing still. My friend yells WHOALY SH-! and I'm just sitting there laughing.
Yeah haha, not sure how much I contributed to this thread. I will say though, the Supra is still a beast of a platform, and I love the tail lights on those cars. Just too bad people over-hype it, making it out to be the end all of "tuner rocketz!".
Moral of the story, there are cheaper ways to do the 1/4 mile.
Never really fell for the "OMGSUPRA!!1!" thing. I respect that massive power could be made with bolt-on mods, but beyond that, I guess I would have wished for the MKIV to be a lighter, more sportscar-like creature. 3400 lbs, I think, by the time you got to the twin-turbo variant. For perspective, that's the same weight as the big 'ole Buick GN from the mid-'80's.
With an all wheel drive system and modern safety features I'd say that's not too bad. Lighter than lots of other sporty cars out there and they don't feel to heavy either on the butt dyno. Most modern cars are just plain porky. Growing up reading car mags/popular mechanics etc. I would have thought everything would be carbon fiber etc by now, especially now with the cost of gas, but it seems to me like manufactures would rather just make up for the bloated weight by adding more horsepower than to invest in lightweight tech. I guess a lot of it has to do with the fact that the average car buyer will be more impressed by a higher HP number than a lower curb weight, even if the lighter car has a better power to weight ratio.
Wouldn't that basically be a GMC syclone? GM actually did a really limited run of turbo Trans Ams with the 3.8 turbo from the GNX. They did 0-60 in 4.9 seconds.... in 1989 They cancelled it though, I'm sure because they realized it would decimate corvette sales. Back then the corvettes were around 5.7 to 0-60.
I should get an award for my first thread hitting over 60 replays lol...even though some off topic it's been an enjoyable read...I read an article that back in 1987 the last g body car off the assembly line in Pontiac Michigan was a Grand National... From then most everything car wise went front wheel drive with the exception of corvette, Camaro and Transam. I also " I-tuned "a video called "black air"....very cool documentary!
syclones are the best. Me and my pal in high school always wanted one of those, or a foxbody, then we got into imports because we realized we had no money and enjoyed turning corners more than the drag strip.
You must know of the C5 Corvette? Very potent track car. Also the newer Mustangs can be very competitive with only minor suspension modifications. True though, most of the older muscle cars weren't that nimble.
...Yeah, cause us (then) high school teenagers could afford a corvette or a newer mustang. Even then, the newer mustangs at the time (05 v6 and 07 GT are the models I drove) handled like a boat in my opinion without modification. Newest models I've been told are excellent like the '12 and '13 v6 and boss 302 etc. ..However, those didn't even exist when we were buying cars.
We couldn't afford to build a foxbody or even buy a syclone and made the judgement that 80's muscles were a bad idea for our situation, also they would be our daily drivers. I ended up with an RSX, then got my WRX. I don't regret it. The cars we bought turned out to be much better cars for us, our budgets, our interests, and our age.
