I'm curious why you feel this way? It is quite evident that the 5mt sourced from the LGT is significantly stronger than the previous gearset used in the 2003-2007 WRX. While all Subaru gearboxes suffer from the same problem (exceptionally long input shaft and bearing design), I wouldn't go so far to say it isn't a tremendous improvement over prior generations.

Plain and simple its an outdated, over stressed crappy design. I have every bandaid you can buy and its like rowing a ****ing boat, or shifting a tractor. The flywheel/decel noise and hamburger grinder sound are ridiculous. The clutch pedal feels like You are crushing a cardboard box everytime you step on it, and has since new. Any comparable car in the segment including the STI has far better boxes. Hell the miata has a better gear box. I drove my buddies 2010 wrx for 200 miles and it wasn't any better than mine.

If the 2015 wrx in hatch form has a 2.0T and a nice 6 mt for around $25k, I'd be a player. But I'm rather doubtful it'll happen.

OK, but the 6MT suffers from similar structural design flaws (do not give me the "case flex excuse," it is an overused myth) with the exception of using a larger center-line spacing which adds to the gear strength.

Clarkson's comments like these certainly aren't limited to just Subarus. Knowing his style, I'm not sure I'd believe him if he told me 1 + 1 = 2. In the end, it's all part of what makes him so entertaining.

Ok, I thought the OP was just being sarcastic. But I just went to Subaru's UK website and the WRX is gone..... gone? Really?? Then I guess it really was cheaper competition that killed it. Wow. Shame.

Not really. Subaru isn't competitive in the market because they have done next to nothing to improve their design over the years. Personally, I will not be owning a newer model turbo Subaru any time soon. They make great economy(ish) cars though.

The smaller engines are a step forward. I was asking for smaller, not larger engines when Subaru went from 2,0 to 2,5 l turbo motors.

Even so there's the pricing, paint, fuel consumption, and spares costs to contend with.
