The Golf R is basically the top of the line performance VW Golf...Just like the STI is the top of the line performance Subaru Impreza.
You'd see the WRX compete more with the GTI.

How come all the stuff online seems to be pitting the STI against the the VW Golf R? seems like an unfair match, as the base WRX should be faster.
The Golf R is basically the top of the line performance VW Golf...Just like the STI is the top of the line performance Subaru Impreza.
You'd see the WRX compete more with the GTI.

"Isn't it amazing how smart you feel when you just aren't being stupid?"
VW is mad.....so mad
Yea I saw one in person one day and thought that I could see my self in that car. It's real nice and built well butttttt, for what it does for 37k (which was what the dealership was asking) it just didn't make since. That and I saw that even the vw guys aren't really THAT happy with it. And I heard there are problems with the motor they have in it. IDK, I guess if you want to be seen in it and have the money why not. That and the fact it is awd seems to be causing a stir with it.
I like the VW R's, looked at the R32 back 5 years ago or so. Very refined interior. But the Golf R is 256HP vs the base WRX's 265. Base WRX is also lighter. No need to kick it up to the STi to go against this car.
A friend just bought one, paid about 33k, has had it 5 months and is having issues with a grinding noise when turning left. Dealership wont do anything about it.
That, better suspension, racing bucket seats like a evo x, and more HP. I'm sure there is more but yea
I actually watched a video where they matched it with a wrx. Gotta find it again.
I saw the review of the Golf on TV. I thought it looked like a great car right up until they said the price and then I almost choked. Its' nice but it's not $37k nice.
Maybe I'm just old but $37k is no chump change. You can get some real cars for that kind of cash.

The pure fact that the golf r will be worth more than an sti in 5 years..

I think the golf r is a great car other then the price, reliability, and the crowd that typically buys them... I just don't see $37k worth of car, you could get a LOT more car for that kind of money...

Yes... you need engine management for engine modifications

R32's used to get compared in the old days. The bottom line seemed to be that we're talking about two very different kinds of performance cars, one-biased towards raw performance, the other-biased more towards luxury and refinement. I'm willing to bet that a lot of that money goes to a much nicer interior/fit/finish.
Haven't seen one for myself, though, so what do I know?![]()
