I guess it all comes down to two factors, for me:
1) Streetracing is illegal. Since that's the case, I'm not going to encourage anyone else to do it, and I'm not going to do it. I have way too much to lose.
2) Cars these days are very quick, relative to where we were 30 years ago. It took a while to get to 80 miles per hour, and that felt really fast in '70's and '80's vintage cars. You'd get up to those speeds, and start saying "Whoa, horse!", because the car was shaking and becoming hard to control. My wife's minivan is quiet and leisurely at those speeds. A modern, performance-oriented car can scoot to 100mph in no time flat, with no drama.
Yet...it's still 100mph, which carries not twice, but 4 times the kinetic energy of 50mph, given the same mass. The potential for injury/death is massive.
Can it be safely done on public roads? Sure. Of course.
But here's the rub. Do I trust all of you to do it safely on public roads?
Nope.
(nothing personal, I've just seen too much over the last 30 years of driving.)

Is anyone else getting negative rep for the negative comments?
That's the truth Ray. I usually tend to not street race but that night i made the exception seeing that it was about 2am and there was no one near besides the cars about a mile behind us. I may be young but i know when something is not safe to do and i would not put myself in that predicament of getting hurt or potentially hurting others. I'm not posting saying omg im such an awesome mofo i drive a bamf wrx i race all day err day...that's not me. By the way is anyone here from utah going to attend the Rocky Mtn Raceway may 5th for the opening drag night? hope to see everyone there should be awesome!
Best be careful in Utah. Aside from being a bad idea in general, a street exhibition (racing/accel contest) is a class B misdameanor. The penalty is up to 6 months in jail, a $1000 fine, and a 2 month suspension of your license for the first offense. Troppers also have the option of hitting you with reckless driving depending on the mood they are in.
I always accelerate quickly, and I'm afraid one of these days that a trooper is going to mistake that as racing when someone besides me accelerates as well. Unfortunately it's just a judgement call on a troopers behalf.

In PA you can get stopped for illegal street racing just by accelerating too fast....involving one or more cars...yep...you can race yourself...
