The plastics. Each has their own opinion, 2002-2004 WRX and STis have a fair amount of soft-touch materials. I don't like the prevalence of cheap plastics in the newer models.

agreed, subaru is a great car. fun to drive, great motor, reliable 5 speed.... however, the interior is crap... i have a 2012 on order and the stereo sucks, the plastics are terrible, and the seat covers seem loose to me...... but i still love the car, the interior was a sacrifice i was willing to make.

That's because the WRX is nearly the same price it was 10 years ago. They had to make sacrifices to combat inflation

My buyeye's interior used to bother me as it's fairly low-rent, but it's grown on me, and the soft touch plastics are much nicer than many new cars today (not just Subaru). I like the bugeye seats better than the new WRXs, although I think the newer ones offer a better driving position as far as reaching the shifter, pedals, and wheel, at least for my body dimensions.

The thing that irks me the most about my interioris the lack of a boot around the hand brake. That gaping hole seems to collect all sorts of crumbs, crud, and crap. This can be remedied though.

Subaru isn't as bad as most other Japanese manufacturers these days. Honda is the worst offender. The new Accord's interior is about as miserable as I've seen.

After attending the most recent DC Auto show, I've realized that Hyundai/Kia offers the best interior/$ ratio of any import. Wow. Who would have thought?

This area of dials and materials has always seemed really cheapo to me.

It is cheepo. In 2005 the whole center console was constructed from that material. In 2008, the whole dash was constructed from that material. I'm not arguing that the Bugeye has the same interior quality as a Morgan, but Subaru interiors have gotten worse in recent years.

And yet one of the big complaints with recent model year VW's is that they've cheaped on the plastics and such, especially the Jetta I believe, in order to keep costs down.

It's all subjective. A 2012 WRX interior seems a helluva lot nicer than my 8 year old acura interior that is supposedly filled with "better" surfaces and such. And yet, I know that the squeak/rattle in the middle of the dash near the climate controls has been there for many many years. The nice leather seat has had my butt imprint in it for as long as I can remember. So how much better were the materials and fit/finish really?

For me, as long as the door panel isn't breaking off like tortilla chips when I get in and out of the car (Volvo 240 FTW!) I don't mind. I like interior quality to a point (the non-breaking point) and think that the look of the WRX, regardless of what it's made out of, is nice. But I guess that's why I'm buying one of them and not a GTI.

My bugeye's interior is plenty nice enough for me, cheap or no. I actually prefer its stark functionality over some "prettier" dashes in the Ford/Nissan/Toyota rentals that I've had, recently. (some cheap materials there, too, on the Fords)

Is it an Audi level of niceness? Not even close. But that's what you pay for in a $40K+ car. I'd much rather have an "acceptable" interior and have the money put towards the mechanicals.

But then, that's why we're all here, right?
