So What Happened?

This is not meant to be a complaint ... I guess ... but I'm wondering why this section of the forum has become a bit of a dead spot. Looking back at the first posts in this thread (160+ pages ago) this thread was filled with stories of people's exploits on the roads and beyond with their cars. Though occasionally the stories were too far off into the "dangerous" category, the majority were of the sort that we all run into on the roads - you know, someone wants to see what we have and when the opportunity is there (clear open roads, etc) we drop the pedal and go. Unless I'm the only "crazy" driver who does that ...

The stories were good to read and often entertainingly written. BUT ... it seems that as of late those tales have disappeared. Often when a story pops up there is someone to admonish the readers that street racing is dangerous and that innocents can suffer - both true and important points that I agree with. But I have no doubt that we all still have some good stories that are happening to us presently, and I for one would love to hear about them.

Again - I don't care to read about the race you had where you swerved in and out of traffic or ran through a neighborhood, but it's nice to hear how our cars stack up in the real world. Even a good tale of an exhilarating drive on a twisty road is fun to read.

If those stories are not meant to be on this thread, so be it, but I am curious what the rest of you think about my comments.

Totally pulled on a minivan in a school zone this morning in the freezing rain...I mean ;)

Actually, I do have one. Last week when it was high 40's low 50's, I opened up the sunroof and slung the car through some curves. I will say it's just as satisfying as going flat out on a desserted straightaway. Even driving home from the dealership the first night was a blast. There's this nice hilly, winding road that I usually take to head north. On the way up to the dealer I would be braking and slow to about 45/50 MPH. On the way back in the new Subie, it was a little higher and there were many grins. :) This car has made me appreciate and long for the twisties.

I had an exciting drive to work this morning in my TDI. I entered the on ramp for the highway by my house. I accelerated hard, then braked hard and eased it into the hard right hand turn. I waited for the car to grip and layed onto the throttle hard. I accelerated to about 75mph hard while swinging wide out of the curve, and then had to panic stop for the cars in front of me. I then drove for about 10 feet then stopped. Then accelerated to 5mph, then stopped. Then rolled for 5 feet, then stopped. I then drove for another 15 feet, then stopped. Then accelerated to 5mph, then stopped. Then rolled for 5 feet, then stopped. I then drove for another 15 feet, then stopped. Then accelerated to 5mph, then stopped. Cool ... thanks for sharing your input on the changes to the thread. :shakehead:

Seriously though - is that the problem? All of us are to stuck in commuter traffic to have any fun?

I'm just trying to figure out why this part of the forums has changed so dramatically. Anyone?

There's a reason they complain and apparently, it worked!

imagine if we could get our government to work so well? :0

bragging about a street victory is one thing.. but remember folks everything you write in digital format on the web stays on the web... anyone can find it, including the authorities. Private forum or not, if you hurt someone they can come out and find all kinds of data stacked against you.

A little play on a deserted road in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night.. sure go have fun, but be careful what you put in writing ;)

I did notice - as was just mentioned by deerkiller42002 that there seemed to be a quick reprimand that took place for people's stories, but can it in anyway impact the website and its creators/members? If a member posted a story that was related to an accident and the authorities connected it can anyone get in trouble beyond the poster? I guess an argument could be made - far fetched but anything can happen in court - that the site in some way promotes it by allowing the stories to be shared. Is that the fear? God knows our society is so very afraid of the lawsuit, and that fear impacts choices in every arena - some for good and some more in the WTF vein. If not, then it really should simply be up to the individual members to decide whether to post or not.

... but be careful what you put in writing ;)
Thanks for the good point. This makes sense and is one of the reasons I keep my web profile very low.

Still, there are plenty of tales to tell that involve nothing that should lead to legal entanglements - or so I would hope.

:rotfl: at TR's epic tale.

Maybe I've been on the forum too long..actual streetracing stories have become formulaic to me.

GIOC = "Guy in Other Car"

1)GIOC gives snotty look or gesture, justifying dangerous speeds on public roads
2)GIOC engages in aggressive driving maneuver, justifying dangerous speeds on public roads
3)Teller of tale and GIOC both supposedly hit gas
4)Teller of tale is victorious, winning by 1-3 car lengths
5)GIOC is embarrassed that his Viper got beat by a WRX with hot gf in car, who now licks lips for Teller of tale's benefit.
6)GIOC pronounces Subaru dominance over the world, though 3 car lengths over a quarter of a mile is actually only a difference of about 1% and may have more to do with the fact that GIOC didn't know he was involved in a race until some guy in a flat-brimmed cap roared ahead of him in a car with a gigantic spoiler.

:)

I find it interesting that every car forum has an active kills section, even for cars well into the six-digit price range. Of course their encounters are usually more exotic and involve more remote locations and interesting opponents but the basics are indeed the same.

And I think that's the first time I've ever seen a daily datalog session put into words :D

Well, maybe not every car forum. At least three I am on absolutely forbid any discussion of anything remotely resembling street racing.

I haven't had a race in a long time...My job changed locations...no real challenges or meets...that is what stopped my posts...plus, it's winter.

when the police, highway patrol, NSA, DEA, CIA, and all the other govertment agencies as well as lawyers and large law firms and the court system stop digging around in peoples facebook/myspace/friendster pages and all the forums and blogs that people write in when they do something illegal, then i think everyone will feel much more comfortable writing in a public forum about street racing.

example, there was a thread a while ago about a news article about some moron that was speeding through a neighborhood in his bmw, and he got caught and thrown in jail b/c they found out about who he was b/c he was bragging about going like 140mph on a public road in a web forum.

High school kids constantly post pictures of themselves on Facebook and the like engaged in illegal activities - drinking, drug use, vandalism, assaults and more. On top of that they also do it under their real names or leave obvious clues in the stories/images that make it easy to identify them.

They always seem shocked when they are confronted with the information - they just don't get how accessible things really are.

My observations about what gets posted here are based on watching for the last 9 years...we've had plenty of kids out there cruising for races and taunting. It has been less so, in the last few months, since we put some new ideas in place about what is acceptable.

I find it hard to believe that everyone that talks negatively about street racing has never raced in there entire driving career!!
Perhaps you should be listening to those who have and stopped due to the infinite dangers involved to them and others.

Who better to warn you of the dangers of drugs, the person who never tried them, or the junkie who wrecked their life?

I race at the track. Gas is too expensive to waste racing around town and because some punk in a '92 Escort GT with a fart can tries to goad me into racing. Gas here is like 3.70 a gallon so it's about a 45$ fill up from a quarter tank for me. True story this kid with a douchebag pencil thin beard and a backwards ball cap tried to race me and my buddy. Downshifting, flipping us off, yelling obscenities...I really don't understand some people. Not to say I don't enjoy a good throttle romping so I can hear my EWG open :) Tickets are too expensive to risk and I enjoy driving too much to lose my license because I decided it was a good idea to do 140mph through a school zone in reverse while blasting chumbawumba's tub thumper because I wanted to show that Honduh with his VTAK who is boss...

If you want to brag about being an *******, don't get upset about people calling you an *******.

If you wanted to race because you enjoy it, you would find your fix somewhere other than the road. Your motives are immature and you will always be called out for it.

How many people here post stories about cars they killed at the track? Very few. They race for themselves, not to seek approval. Once idiot street racers learn they won't get that approval, the trend will slowly die off.

And these sections will continue to die from forum to forum. I don't know if you've noticed, more and more people are starting to really hate street racers. It's a good thing. The more people that hate it, the less the next generation of idiots will do it.
¼-mile at a time, man...

I didn't realize how much fire this topic had in it.

Ultimately it seems to come down to a few things gleaned from the posts:

1. If street racing stories are your thing, then read them from another site's forums. Although at one time they were common and welcome here, that is no longer the case. Call it a case of growing up, or just becoming more aware of the realities of this form of media and its public and open nature, but the majority of vocal members here are no longer interested in having posts of that type here.
2. As much as I have enjoyed reading them when I have, it is more of a vicarious experience than one that inspires me to be like them. Unfortunately, that is not always the case - people will argue that stories like these simply inspire dangerous activities - and they will be right in some cases. If that is true then it opens up the forum and posters to liabilities. Especially the idiots who include information that could lead back to them (seriously, why are some people so stupid?)
3. If you really do want to post stories, why do it here? There clearly are sites that are populated by people who want to hear about your latest race - tell them.

The thing is, I started this thread hoping to get more people to post stories again, because I did enjoy reading them just like I enjoy watching a driving scene in a film. But after this discussion I get the reason why they have disappeared from the site. I will be one of those who will probably visit some other sites to read a story or two as a time killer - I can admit it, but for me I see them more as creative writing than reality anyway. Suggesting that these posts encourage people to break the law is in the same order as saying that TV and film are responsible - which to some extent is true, but it still comes down to the choices individuals make.

How dare you bring reason and logic into this thread!! I'll make a guess that you are between 40 - 45 years of age. You failed to use "teh" in your paragraph, and used all the proper punctuation necessary. You must hail from a time that they actually taught English grammar in school.

Now back to the romper room. Where is the kill story I'm waiting for???
